Campania worries in the last hours. The more than 5 thousand cases of positive currently in Covid -19 register an important peak, with a vertiginous increase in the last month. The Vincenzo De Luca region ranks first in Italy in new daily infections by Covid-19 (248) compared to new swabs made, approximately 4,901. Still very few compared to other high-risk regions like Lombardy (22,805) and Lazio (9,112).
And so, in the region with the highest population density in the country, the obligation to wear a mask also returns to the open air. An ordinance long discussed by the Regional Crisis Unit together with Governor De Luca, who is also fully shared by Professor Maurizio Di Mauro, from the Cotugno Hospital in Naples. The health reality considered a structure of excellence in the field of infectious diseases and the fight against Covid since the beginning of the pandemic.
Professor, what is happening in Campania?
“The expansion of the levees certainly went wrong. Before the summer we had managed to keep Campania almost Covid-free, with very few infections despite the extremely high population density. Then summer came and the highly irresponsible attitude shown above all by young people in clubs and squares continued to occur even in foreign places with a high level of contagion, anticipating what we only partially imagine for the autumn period.
So should we keep talking about a vacation drag?
“Unfortunately not anymore and that is the most serious point. We can no longer speak of import cases but of autochthonous outbreaks. While in the return phase the young people were intercepted with a strategy aimed at tracking travelers, now the infections are in the territory. Now the grandparents, the parents, the relatives become more multipliers of a transmission that does not seem to stop and of which I am very concerned.
Who is doing the worst?
“All unfortunately, no one excluded. I live in the hospital and I also live in the city, it would be a hypocrite if I did not tell you at this moment that there is a great feeling of irresponsibility on the part of the citizens. They are not observing any rules. Neither distancing, nor a mask, nor sanitation, nothing. And considering the density of inhabitants, the risk is double compared to any other region in Italy.
To say that I am angry is an understatement, it is very little. We are undermining all the work of healthcare workers who have been on the front line for months, become infected and even die. The lightness that I see in bars or on the streets suggests a sense of omnipotence on the part of people that seems absurd to me.
The regional council is now intervening with more restrictions, sadly forced to step back. A management strategy that worked halfway?
“I think that what we have achieved so far in Campania has been miraculous, and I say this as an infectious disease specialist and as a simple health worker as I believe. Being able to stop and control a virus with such a high transmission speed for months in a region like Campania cannot be taken for granted and this is also due to the strategy adopted.
Just think of the monitoring of all asymptomatic vacationers, if they had circulated freely they would have generated a catastrophe. The only element that I want to reproach is control. We can issue another ten ordinances but if the forces in charge of controlling that the rules are not properly deployed, it will be difficult not to make the same mistakes. This is, without a doubt, a critical issue in the management of the territory that influenced a large part of the summer period and in what the Region is now forced to experience.
The return to masks even in the open air goes back some time, are we going to risk a new total closure?
“Unfortunately, the conditions are there. Obviously I hope not and I believe that the order of the mask can be a good tool to stop this worrying growth. As well as the rules for pubs and discos. The dead continue to exist, even for 40 years. And the beds in Cotugno fill up much faster. We are ready for anything, but if we collaborate we can save ourselves from great danger.
Speaking of places, the Region has also decided to implement the so-called Phase C: the increase of places in the pavilions, currently 700 in total, and that will have to be increased. How many people hospitalized for Covid are there currently in Cotugno in Naples?
“We have made beds available according to regional planning and they have been filling very quickly, currently reaching more than 70 hospitalized people. Of these, sixteen they are in sub-intensive and ventilated, 8 in intensive care of which 3 incubated. In 7 days the conversion of a wing of the hospital will be carried out to accommodate possible cases of Covid for a total of new 140 Beds. We will try to cope with the wave as best we can, if I realize we need it 200, I will convert everything I have to Covid places.
Net of this, I must say that fortunately other territorial structures have also joined the network, such as the Covid center in Ospedale del Mare, Scafati and Salerno. There is a network that allows Cotugno not to feel the weight that he suffered a long time ago.
The fight in front of the hospital between those waiting to do the swab, however, was two days ago. The fear is mounting and the forces to secure tampons may now require an upgrade.
“Without a doubt, panic is widespread and local health authorities are slow to deliver results in a very short time. So people come to the hospital knowing they have quicker responses and safe service. The problem is that with the new numbers this is no longer possible. For this reason, yesterday I decided to do a swab only to symptomatic people detected by the emergency room, as a hospital we must take care of welcoming the sick. For projection activities, it is the territory that has to intervene and provide structured support ».
A little more than 4 thousand new swabs made throughout the Region, don’t these numbers also include possible flaws in the tracking system?
«I feel that I can respond negatively to this reading. The strategy that has been adopted has also worked by virtue of the cases that in June did not exceed 5 thousand of the 6 million inhabitants. The sprouts were immediately suffocated. This is not the key, considering the work done so far.
Today, at a time when the condition of the transmission is different, we are aware of the need to improve the shock absorbers as well. Currently we travel with 7-8 thousand tests per day, we have widely reached the 100 thousand total swabs performed. But the main cause of our momentary hope for defeat was, unfortunately, the possibility of going on vacation, going to crowded places, freeing ourselves from commitments and limitations. A possibility that has resulted in irresponsibility ”.
