Britain slides into a new lockdown. On Tuesday night, in a televised speech, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will announce a curfew for pubs and restaurants, which is due to close at 10 p.m. starting Thursday. He also backs down on trying to encourage employees to return to the office – who can, prefers to work from home The first response to the increase in infections, which now sees more than 4,000 new cases a day: the government fears that the country is starting in the same wake as Spain and France and has therefore decided to pull the emergency brake. And stricter measures are not excluded, in case this first tightening does not give the desired effects: there is talk of a two-week confinement between the end of October and the beginning of November, coinciding with the school holidays.
Contagion risks
The public prepared for the worst on Monday with a dramatic press conference given by the government’s medical adviser and scientific adviser: at this rate, they explained, Britain is at risk of 50,000 infections and 200 deaths a day (although be levels still far from the peak of the epidemic in April, when there were almost a thousand deaths per day: and in fact, the number of hospitalizations and deaths is still very low). Johnson does not want to take any risk and has reversed it: only the intervention of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, who fears for the stability of the economy, has dissuaded him from imposing the immediate closure of pubs and restaurants. In fact, the government is following a very narrow path: how to prevent the epidemic from spreading again without strangling the incipient economic recovery. People are now confused, so many mixed messages have come from the authorities that it is difficult to understand. But Johnson must also guard against growing rumors coming from the belly of the Conservative party, hostile to the new restrictive measures. Whatever happens, it will be a warm autumn in London.
