(ANSA) – ROME, SEPTEMBER 21 – Some 70 whales are stranded in a Tasman Bay, an island off the coast of Australia, and large numbers of experts are mobilizing in the hope of saving them.
The whales are found in Macquarie Harbor on the island’s sparsely populated and rugged west coast, where the mammals are believed to have stranded on a sandbar. “More crews with proper whale rescue equipment will arrive later,” the Tasmania Department of the Environment reported. The mass stranding of whales occurs relatively frequently in Tasmania, but the large number of animals involved this time casts off the prospect of a rescue. However, a while ago, a humpback whale that got stuck in a tropical river in northern Australia managed to find its way back to the ocean on its own within two weeks. (HANDLE).
