In France, the Covid situation is increasingly in danger. And even more so on the French Riviera, especially in Nice, the main city. Stronger restrictions have been in place here since Friday than at the national level, such as a ban on gathering more than ten in public places, including parks and gardens, but also on the beach which, along the Promenade des Anglais, is an important area. socialize for nice.
As for the daily number of contaminations in the city, we are now 200 per 100,000 inhabitants, higher than the average of 88 for the whole of France and four times the level considered alert. Not only that: 30% of the places available in resuscitation in hospitals are occupied by patients with coronavirus compared to 15% of the national average. And so, on Thursday, the Minister of Health Olivier Véran had asked Bernard González, prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes (the department, equivalent in Italy of the province, which in addition to Nice includes Antibes and Cannes and, in the interior, Grasse) , and Christian Estrosi, the very popular mayor of the capital, to take initiatives. These were announced on Friday, they only applied in Nice. But they could be deployed across the department next week.
What is it about? In addition to the maximum limit of ten people for groups in public places, the bars have been closed from midnight to six in the morning: especially for Vieux Nice, the historic center of Nice, it is a kind of “revolution”. In the same period of time, public broadcasting of music is also prohibited. Not only that: the sale of alcohol is no longer possible after 8 pm. And when it comes to big events, while at the national level there is a maximum number of participants of 5,000 people (the same that will be allowed for Roland Garros, the well-known Parisian tennis tournament), Nice has dropped to a thousand.
In any case, the match between the local team, which is part of Ligue 1, French Serie A, and PSG (Paris Saint-Germain), scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday), will be played at the city stadium but behind closed doors, without public participation. All the initiatives that were planned this weekend for the Heritage Days (possibility of visiting several private buildings) have also been canceled.
Meanwhile, some employees at Chu, Nice’s university hospital, have admitted to continuing to work, despite being identified as positive for Covid. And this is due to the lack of personnel to replace them. Estrosi protested, calling the situation “inconceivable.” In any case, these health personnel respect the “barrier gestures” of distancing themselves from colleagues and patients. And it cannot be done otherwise.
