Fayez al Serraj, prime minister of Libya’s only internationally recognized government, announced on Wednesday that he will resign at the end of October. Serraj is the head of the Government of National Accord (often referred to by his initials in English, GNA), located in Tripoli and who has long competed with the Eastern government for control of Libya; its militias fight against those linked to Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who in turn is linked to the eastern government, based in Tobruk.

Reuters wrote that Serraj’s resignation could provoke new clashes between important members of the GNA and between armed groups in Tripoli and Misrata. Serraj has long been viewed as a very weak prime minister, unable to unite Libya under one authority, but also as a moderate leader who had established close diplomatic relations with several countries.

Serraj has led the GNA since the government was formed in 2015. The GNA was the result of a UN-backed political agreement that aimed to unite and stabilize Libya, following the civil war that began in 2011 and led to impeachment. of the then president Muammar Gaddafi.
