WHO: no elbow salute, no safe distance allowed
There are different types of greetings that can replace the classic handshake to avoid contagion. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director of the WHO, returning to the subject, explained that he had chosen as his greeting the gesture of putting his hand to his heart. Among the most used since the beginning of the pandemic is the foot salute, which was renamed “Wuhan shake”, in honor of the city where the infection began. Alternatively, for example, you can return to India with the “namaste”, which consists of joining the hands at the height of the chest, chin or forehead, while hinting at a bow with the head.

Similar to namaste is the Wai, the typical Thai greeting. To do this, simply put your hands together in prayer in front of your chest and accompany them with a slight bow. Then there is the “shaka” salute typical of Hawaii and also adopted by surfers: the three middle fingers are clenched into a fist, releasing the little finger and thumb, and then the hand is shaken. If you want to experience something more curious, there is, for example, the typical greeting of the Samoa Islands: you raise your eyebrows and at the same time you have to try to show off a radiant smile. Finally, there is a very simple alternative: to greet each other at a safe distance simply “wave” with the hand.
