Poetry is for everyone, here’s why and how to teach it in schools. [INTERVISTA]

Not just with math. Not only with singing and painting. Even with poetry they make us think from a young age that we are out of tune or that it is not for us, that no, we were not born with talent. And yet neither talent nor gift have much to do with poetry.

Poetry is for everyone. In recent days we interview Professor Lorella Carimali, author of the book “The equation of freedom. In mathematics is the key to rebirth “ (Rizzoli, September 2020), with which he dismantles the double stereotype according to which mathematics is only understood by those who are born with talent and is not a woman’s thing. Arguing that poetry is for everyone and that there is a possibility in schools to activate a more profitable approach so that students can take over the toolbox to be able to write beautiful poems well is Luciano Prandini, from Castelfranco Emilia. At almost seventy years old, a former unionist and today also an editor and famous cartoonist, Prandini, who won the Montale Prize for Poetry in recent years with his poem “Western Waters”, sees poetry as a tool capable of understanding oneself, because, He says, “Poetry is a highway for the unconscious” and he successfully carries out a project in the schools of Modena with which he teaches students to write poetry. Already a member of the Modena provincial secretariat of the CGIL in the formidable 70s and in the subsequent years of the collapse of the eastern regimes, in which many on the left had looked with a hope that was later betrayed, Prandini explains that “poetry does not it is a simple exit but a fundamental element of introspection and gratification, as well as a superior form of communication and relationship with others. We are all potentially poets “.

Luciano Prandini, hence the idea of reaching students, in schools. But don’t you study poetry in school?

“School curricula do not go into poetry. I run a cultural club and a publishing house, Rossopietra, we do cultural activities, we want to spread poetry and literature. I have been going to schools for some time to make sure that children understand what poetry is from within. In school one works mainly on rhetorical figures or the texts of this or that poet are analyzed, the text is analyzed. People think that it is an abstraction of reality. He thinks that it is the transcription of an emotion, of an exit, and this by the prevailing culture and the materialistic and hedonistic vision that compresses the soul. On the contrary, poetry helps to understand oneself and interpret reality because it illuminates, brings to the surface the deepest, the most intimate, releases hidden energies, promotes inner balance, is an instrument of liberation and growth, then the poetry is necessity, necessity. . And when you write a poem and write it the way you want, you have a great feeling of liberation, of catharsis. Poetry is a need that we have, it allows us to learn to know ourselves and relate to others. A more authentic contract is established. When reading a poem, you return to the psychology of a person. Obviously, you must have the ability to do so “

How are your lessons taught?

“My project has two moments. The children have to write poems that we later review and correct in class. And they understand more. You write a poem, then we look at it together, you may tell him that he wrote it in an everyday and banal style of language. We need to go to the essentials, try to clean up some sentences, find a term with assonance that gives it rhythm. And in this way the students understand and become more aware of how poetry is formed and written. A poet can do this teaching: a teacher if the practice of poetry is difficult. It’s like teaching music without practicing it “

Which state am I at school?

“It was great. After so many experiences in primary school, the first experiment two years ago was at the Meucci Technical Institute in Carpi, with the teacher Alessandra Gasparini. It was a success, because in the end we published the poems in a little book, the children they felt stimulated and gratified. Teenagers feel, they feel that there is this positive energy in poetry, you get a lot of self-esteem by doing it. We are all potentially poets. It is not a gift. It is a spark for a situation that we feel and that is the result from the environment in which we live, the experience. We live and learn from the environment, inspiration comes from an inner root. And it is possible to promote it, cultivate it, you must seek it within yourself. It is a scythe that can be ignited. And from that’s where we start and write ”.

Is it a bit like philosophy, which is enjoying increasing success among non-experts?

“I think that poetry also surpasses philosophy. Philosophy is based on reasoning, poetry is based on intuition, in the secret part of us, it is based on the unconscious. And that translates when we write in words and pictures. It becomes a more authentic and spontaneous communication tool ”.

A beautiful tool

“Of course, those who practice poetry live better.”
