A vitamin for Salvini | The HuffPost

NAPOLI, CAMPANIA / NAPOLI, ITALY – 2020/09/12: Matteo Salvini among supporters and social centers protest in Madrid. It ended with the rally in Piazza Matteotti, in the heart of Naples, Matteo Salvini’s mini electoral tour in Campania, began this morning, in support of Stefano Caldoro, center-right candidate in the regional elections scheduled for 20 and 21 September: Shortly before the intervention of the leader of the League in Piazza Matteotti began, not far away, in Largo Berlinguer, the so-called antagonists, groups of anti-fascist and anti-racist associations of the city, who have expressed their dissent against Salvini, exposing banners and singing choruses against the leader of Carroccio. Who said that Salvini feels hurt by the investigations? Perhaps the opposite is true. It may even be that prosecutors’ attention to him has the tonic effect of a vitamin, allowing him to present himself to the Regionals as a persecuted politician. There is the illustrious case of the Knight who, especially in elections, emerges the wave of his 35 trials to present himself as the sacrificed lamb of collective sins (“they hit me but it can happen to each one of you”). The more they tried to drag him into the dock, often near elections, the more Berlusconi presented himself as a martyr for mechanical justice and his already broad consensus grew. Matteo is not Silvio, the size of the characters is still quite different; but until he is caught red-handed, the leader of the League can always proclaim himself innocent and report an attempt to kill him in court. For the suspect’s machine to go haywire a week after the vote is simply a great convenience. Also because it returns those spotlights that had gone elsewhere.

Months have passed since Salvini no longer “bore.” She often appears on television, but the ratings remain mediocre. Since he is no longer a minister, people have yawned and changed channels. In August it was outnumbered by “Don Matteo” and “Paperissima”. The growth in social networks has paused for reflection, despite the fact that the propaganda team led by Luca Morisi shoots him about thirty tweets a day on his behalf. Now Salvini makes the title because he grabs his girlfriend Francesca in public, when they tear off his shirt and chain, if in Campania they throw tomatoes at him or instead it is he who threatens to jump out of the plane with a parachute. To arouse interest, the great Ennio Flaiano would say, Salvini is forced to “make Tarzan”, that is, to invent circus numbers. All because of a message eternally identical to itself, with the merit of coherence, but which over time has become monotonous and repetitive, known and obsessive. The invasion of migrants. The NGO accomplices of the smugglers. Deaf and insensitive Europe. The criminals are mercilessly closed to the cage. Minister Azzolina will be expelled. All a déjà vu that, as such, is not news.

Like it or not, the media world works like this: first it exalts you beyond your merits and then once you hit saturation it suddenly drops you. From one day to the next you become invisible, compare to believe what happened to Renzi with his 40 percent in the 2015 European Championship. A year ago, if you listen to the polls, Salvini was almost 37 but managed to lose 12 points in so many months and is now worth a maximum of 25 percent; the Northern League balloon gently returns to the ground. The true enemy of the Captain is precisely this languid sensation of decadence, of smooth gliding, with the future in danger of sliding even before it has enjoyed the fruits.

To reverse the downward trend, it would take a feat, for example a resounding victory where no one had ever achieved it before, next Sunday in Tuscany. If he succeeded in overthrowing half a century of “red” rule in that Region, then Salvini would silence all the doubts that have even arisen within the League. He would return very strong in the center of the ring, ready to deliver the final coup de grace to the government of Conte dos. If, instead, it ends as in Emilia Romagna, with another push against the wall, not even the successes of the center-right in the other regions would dispel the impression of a declining leadership, which has already given its best. Until a few days ago, the second of the two seemed more likely. But the media judicial power returned to work with the stopwatch in hand. And if he continues to victimize him, even Salvini like Silvio can be hopeful.
