Not only naval means, but also aircraft. And we are not talking about an international mission that will be launched in the Mediterranean, but on the contrary of everything available to the different Ngo engaged in these days off Libya. In recent hours, the story of the German NGO Sea Watch has been taking over.
As reported by an article by The truth, in recent days the members of the organization, led by the press officer Giorgia Linardi, complained about the stop imposed by our authorities on flights from Moonbird: “The Italian government has closed its eyes on the central Mediterranean – says a note from Linardi – As of Friday, our civilian surveillance aircraft Moonbird can no longer take off from Lampedusa”.
Moonbird is the medium used for several years by Sea Watch to patrol the stretch of water between the SAR areas of Italy, Libya and Malta. It is not the first time that the authorities of our country have prohibited Moonbird from taking off for “SAR activity declared unauthorized”, thus applying the provisions of the law. Fausto Biloslavo on June 26 the newspaper stressed how on other occasions theEnac, the National Civil Aviation Authority, had detained Moonbird. Although punctually after a few weeks, the plane resumed its activity, which was very expensive. Also in Fausto Biloslavo’s article a monthly expense of about 60 thousand euros was reported to maintain Moonbird.
Which, among other things, is not the only aircraft in the Sea Watch fleet. At the end of June, the German NGO introduced the newcomer on social networks: it is Sea Bird, a brand new reconnaissance plane that immediately went into operation, especially when Moonbird was forced to carry out maintenance work in the early summer : “stopped for maintenance – was read in the Sea Watch tweet of June 29 – Seabird allows us to continue identifying ships in distress, assisting in salvage operations and documenting human rights violations in the Mediterranean ”.
Now that the first plane is stopped but due to the imposition of our authorities, the NGO “consoles” itself by activating Sea bird of France. The truth in fact reported that the other Sea Watch plane took off in recent days from the location of Propiano, in the south of Corsica. From here the vehicle is able to reach the central Mediterranean in a few hours and therefore allow the NGO to patrol the stretch of water affected by the Libyan route.
Thus, Sea Watch’s eye, despite what Linardi said, has not closed. While the authorities in Rome intervened to stop a flight that did not comply with the regulations, those in Paris would not oppose SeaBird taking off from Corsica. And, therefore, the notification activities to the naval means on the ground can continue without major problems. In the same way that these days all the various activities at sea carried out by other NGOs continue.
From the Ionian Sea to the Open Arms, through the Alan Kurdi that has just returned to the sea and Sea Watch 4 itself, which in recent days has brought more than 300 migrants to Italy, the organizations are trying to return at the end of this summer to the office. Also, precisely, by air.
