Nvidia has confirmed that it intends to buy mobile chip giant Arm for $ 40 billion from Japan’s SoftBank. The cash and stock offering will allow the company led by billionaire Masayoshi Son to take over 8.1% of Nvidia and will be completed in March 2022.
With this move, the world’s leading graphics card and GPU manufacturer gets its hands on smartphones and mobile devices. Apple, Samsung and Qualcomm are the big name names that use Arm processors. The Cupertino company has announced that it will begin the transition to this chip architecture on Mac computers as well.
What changes for Nvidia
For the company led by the charismatic Jensen Huang, the operation would also allow them to embark on the world of automotive, robotics and video games with a more agile platform than they own.
In fact, Nvidia already works with Nintendo in the world of video games and with names like Volkswagen in the world of automobiles. Artificial intelligence projects are also launched with Uber and Baidu.
Having Arm CPUs alongside graphics processors is therefore a way to offer AI-integrated services on one hardware platform for a wider variety of devices. As for Softbank, if the price is confirmed, the premium would be 25% in about four years. But now all eyes are on Nvidia. Four years ago, when the Japanese bought Arm, the GPU company was worth $ 30 billion. Today the capitalization is ten times greater.
