The heartbreaking screams of mother Rachida, who lost her only daughter, Safiyya, 1 year old yesterday morning on May 3, and the still uncertain steps of those who have recently learned to walk. Overwhelmed in the yard by Grandpa Ahmed’s car, busy backing up. A tragedy for the Moroccan family made up of the child’s paternal parents and grandparents, who have lived in Ponso for more than ten years and are well integrated in Italy. Papa Nour Eddine Bouchakour, 28, works in an agricultural company, but his grandfather had just started working again after a period of unemployment.

“I was here at the house when the accident happened, but I didn’t feel bumps or brakes. Only the cries of the mother ”, say those who live at 24 Via Palazzi, in Ponso, a number on the street beyond where the tragedy occurred. “I ran out, but the family had already asked for help,” continues the neighbor, also a foreigner, from Eastern Europe. “The helicopter rescue landed right here in front, he adds, pointing to the grassy field across the street.” But for Safiyya there was nothing to do: the head and body wounds were too severe. The child died instantly.

“Grandpa was always nice to her, he picked her up. You could see that he loved her, ”says the neighbor, still incredulous, specifying that the 55-year-old is a quiet guy, even at the wheel. Even more so in the backyard, when he was out in his black Volkswagen Passat, with which he was supposed to go to the market yesterday morning. However, it is there that around 10 am yesterday a tragic fate broke an entire family. “I would not like to be in their place,” says in shaky Italian a friend who arrived from the province of Verona after being warned with a phone call that it is terrible. ”

It is shortly before noon and like him, dozens of other compatriots have arrived from neighboring towns and even from outside the province to give a word of comfort to the family. But the pair of parents is in the hospital of Schiavonia: because she got sick when she saw the lifeless body of her daughter, he helped her. The girl’s grandmother is at home, surrounded by many other compatriots of all ages.

In the yard, relatives, friends and even simple acquaintances are sitting in a circle, their heads bowed, speaking with difficulty. The dusty Passat is still parked in the yard, in front of the farmhouse overlooking the street and divided into many houses. “Safiya’s grandfather is crying, he cannot speak,” some relatives report. He, who is now being investigated for involuntary homicide (due act), does not allow himself to be approached: he has already told the carabinieri everything.
Mayor Matteo Chiodin also rushes to via Palazzi to express closeness and condolences on behalf of the entire community. “It is a terrifying thing. As a parent, I can’t imagine the pain one feels over the death of a child, ”says the mayor, deeply saddened by this tragedy that has hit his family and shocked the entire country.
“They are good people, the father speaks Italian very well and is a hard worker, says the mayor. Over the years, the administrations have helped this family unit through shopping packages, especially when an aunt of the child lived with them, together with small children.
