Amazing Pecco bagnaia. Five weeks off, return to Misano and pick up where he left off. He limps visibly, leaning on his crutch, but when in the saddle he is by far the best of the Ducatis. Print the fastest lap of the race, less than two tenths of the track record, and sign a thrilling overtake around the corner. And then when it stops, it’s always him. Another would be agitated, exalted, brimming with energy. Pecco no. Speak in a low, lucid, and relaxed voice.

The first question, for Sky’s microphones, is almost obvious. How do you drive this Ducati to make it go so fast?

“This is something we understood in the Brno tests last year: from Thailand we are committed to driving like this. At Jerez-1 we had proof that we were right, but I hadn’t thought about the tire wear ahead, and at Jerez -2 I started to notice the difference. Here, after five weeks, being so competitive right away is really amazing “

But can you also give us more details? The feeling is that you ride the bike a little more sliding than the other Ducati fans …

“I actually take off really strong and forward, bringing a lot of speed to the corners, but in the end, if we look closely at the data, I’m a little slower on the rope than others, like Dovi. The speed is more than the others. in detachment and insertion phase “.

Did nervousness and anger help you regain competitiveness? I mean, did you charge while you stayed home?

“Well, I certainly rested, although not so much: I was at home practically only to sleep, then there was the pool, the gym, the rehab, the laser … but I think I took it upon myself to pick up where I left off. The first day I I took him to study, to understand how his leg was doing. From FP3 I started driving without thinking too much about what was happening, just having fun, and it was quite easy for me that this morning, when in warm-up I saw 32 “7 I almost didn’t I believe it”.

“Today I had that rhythm in the race, and it was incredible: in the first laps I was fighting a lot, but as soon as I started pushing everything fell into place. In the last laps I couldn’t hold on any longer: at a certain moment, in turn 3 of the change. Direction my leg gave me a little pang, where I have the plate and it started to bother me. Fortunately it is happening to me, so I’m not worried. “

You have been fast on three very different circuits: Jerez, Brno, Misano. Does this mean that you have found the right balance for the entire World Cup?

“I hope so, because actually one might think that Jerez and Misano are similar, but they are not; today being the most competitive Ducati was really nice. This new riding style of mine seems to adapt very well to the new bike but also to the new tires, and I think we will be able to go fast everywhere with this bike. “

A joke: Jack Miller says he would like to have you as a teammate next year, on the work team. Do you think he still believes it?

“In my opinion, yes. On the contrary, he was very good when I overtook him: he hadn’t ‘entered’ at all but he gave me the space to pass, in Jerez it was more difficult. I think that if he had put the hard lead it would have been him too he was more competitive, but he made another decision because he had a different strategy. In the end I hope so, we work well together and we get results … “

And you would also be happy to be his teammate …

“Let’s say it’s enough for me to be in the official team (and laughs …)”

Comparing to school, let’s say you got a good grade at home today …

“I would say I deserve a good eight, which was a very difficult result when I went to school. I hope to get promoted …”
