Eight doctors from theBambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital are accused of involuntary manslaughter For him death of a two year old. The events go back almost two years ago, when the little one arrived at the Roman Hospital, a world-renowned pediatric center of excellence, from Taormina aboard a helicopter. Today the newspaper La Repubblica reconstructs the ordeal that led to his death due, according to the researchers, to a chain of medical errors that began immediately after his birth.
The child was born on September 15, 2016 and immediately manifested a severe heart problem which requires an urgent operation, which is performed in the pediatric cardiology center of the Bambino Gesù hospital in San Vincenzo. Here the doctors who operate on him making a serious mistake: they mount the pacemaker in the baby’s heart backwards.
No one notices immediately, the child seems to be better but as this error grows, it causes a ‘strangulation’ in the pulmonary artery. Conditions worsen until he arrives in Rome in April 2018: even here the doctors who visit him do not understand the problem. New visit in September and then in December, the doctors decide that there is no urgency to proceed with the operation.
On December 31, the child is transferred by helicopter from Taormina to Rome, here he is hospitalized and operated on but it is already late: on January 1, 2019, death is recorded. The subsequent autopsy will bring to light the macroscopic medical error and will begin the legal battle of the parents who denounce the two hospitals involved. For the prosecutor Daniela Cento, all the doctors involved have acted with “negligence, recklessness and inexperience”.
