Electric cars, should you buy them now or wait?
In recent years, more and more people talk about the electric car as a natural evolution of private transport. Electric cars, which Tesla brought to the fore, have gone from being a rare curiosity to becoming an increasingly common reality. But is it time to invest in an electric car or is it still a gamble and is it better to wait? Let’s look at the pros and cons together.
Positive
First, we point out the often underestimated possibility of recharging the car through the home system. With an average net cost of about 22 cents per kWh, the car can be fully recharged in one night with about 3-5 euros for a “full tank”.
Even less if you use a “wall box” that delivers more power to recharge our car. In addition, both the electric car and the wall box are subject to interesting incentives and tax deductions for any individual.
Finally we consider the maintenance really reduced to the minimum terms. There are no filters or motor oil to replace.
Disadvantages
There will be no maintenance on oil and filters, but electricity requires us to monitor the wear of the batteries. It is estimated that in 8 years the charging capacity of the batteries currently on the market will be reduced to 70-80%. And replacement at this point would appear to be as expensive as the cost of a new vehicle. Ultimately, it will be necessary to see what insurance policies the different sellers will propose with respect to battery packs.
Another problem with the electric at the moment is the objective difficulty of making long trips. Autonomy is already limited, but fast-charging columns are also rare. Which is quick so to speak, because we’re still talking about a couple of hours for a full tank. Which in a medium to long-term trip can make a big difference.
Then there is the sore point of price. At the moment, the market still does not offer great options. And the few options out there aren’t exactly affordable for a low to middle income user.
Electric cars, should you buy them now or wait? In conclusion
In conclusion, the electric car is an excellent option for those who have to travel a few dozen km every day and not many more to go to work or run small errands.
Even better if you have a garage or private parking space to plug in the car at night to “recharge” the battery charge overnight.
For all those who have to travel many kilometers every day or who often have to make long trips it is better to wait a little longer. Undoubtedly, technological evolution will one day make electric cars attractive to all categories, but it may not be the time yet.
