Thirteen new superdirectors. “Italian museums have changed profoundly to the point of becoming an excellence, a positive and recognized model in the world,” said Minister of Cultural Heritage Dario Franceschini when announcing the appointment of thirteen new directors of museums, archaeological parks and libraries.
Among them are: Francesca Cappelletti in the direction of the Borghese Gallery; Stéphane Verger at the National Roman Museum; Edith Gabrielli at the Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia. And then again, Stefano L’Occaso is the new director of the Ducal Palace of Mantua, Mario Epifani of the Royal Palace of Naples, Alessandro D’Alessio of the Archaeological Park of Ancient Ostia.
The directors were selected by a commission of the highest scientific level chaired by the director of the Egyptian Museum in Turin and made up of the directors of the National Gallery in London, the Prado in Madrid and internationally renowned experts.
The commission chose the directors of the thirteen state cultural institutes from among 425 candidates. “Thirteen important realities of Italian cultural heritage – underlined Minister Franceschini – now have a director selected from among the best international experts, thanks to the careful and scrupulous evaluation work carried out by the commission.”
Under the public selection procedure, the minister himself chose the directors of the three top-tier museums (Galleria Borghese, Museo Nazionale Romano, Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia) from among the three candidates identified by the commission for each individual institution; the Director General of Museums, Massimo Osanna, elected in his place the directors of the nine second level museums (National Gallery of the Marches, National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari, National Museum of Abruzzo, National Museum of Matera, Palazzo Ducale of Mantua , Royal Palace of Naples, Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica, Archaeological Park of Sibari, National Gallery of Art of Bologna).
