On Saturday the funeral of Willy Monteiro Duarte, the 21-year-old man who was beaten and brutally murdered between Saturday and Sunday in Colleferro, in the province of Rome, will be held. Bishop Mauro Parmeggiani, Bishop of Palestrina, will officiate at the funeral rite. The farewell to the boy from Cape Verde will be at 10 o’clock at the Paliano sports field, the town of Frosinone where he lived with his family. At the request of Willy’s family, entry to cameras and any type of filming will be prohibited, including via tablets and smartphones.
It will be a sober ceremony – says the mayor of Paliano Domenico Alfieri -, a moment of meditation, reflection and common prayer. The mayor today attended a meeting at the Frosinone police station to organize the funeral. Willy’s family asked for good deeds instead of floral tributes. For the funeral, it is necessary to maintain a safe distance and wear a mask in accordance with anticovid health protocols. I appeal to all the people who want to be present – Alfieri adds -, because this event requires the preparation of a complex organizational machine to manage the expected massive attendance. We must all be extremely responsible. Then go back to Willy: His figure – he concludes – stands as a model for all. This drama requires a moment of reflection on what values we want to give to our society. On Wednesday 9, thousands of people paraded in Paliano during the torchlight procession in memory of the 21-year-old gypsy fan. A night of emotion and great pain, with Willy’s friends, in white T-shirts, to underline: You were too good to be in a rotten world. The mayor of Colleferro, Pierluigi Sanna, suspended his electoral campaign until the day of the funeral. To Willy’s friends – reports Sanna – I told them that in Colleferro many would like to repeat last night’s torchlight procession. The idea was accepted, but they ask us to wait a few days because the family would like to participate but need a break. When Willy’s father, hugging me tightly, thanked me, “he concludes,” I felt ashamed. And when the Cape Verdean ambassador thanked me, I would have liked to disappear. I apologized to both of you, I apologized
