New cases reported in Italy are on the rise for the sixth consecutive week with a cumulative incidence in the last 14 days (period 24 / 8-6 / 9) of 27.89 per 100,000 inhabitants, an increase compared to the period from 6 to July 19. Most of the cases continue to be contracted in the national territory (15% of the new cases diagnosed in the follow-up week are imported from a foreign country). In particular, there is a not inconsiderable percentage of imported cases from other regions and provinces (11.1% in the current week, down from the previous week).
The age of those infected increases, 28% over 50 years
After a sharp drop in the average age of those who contract Covid-19, in the last two weeks the average age of diagnosed cases is increasing again and is about 35 years. In particular, people over 50 years of age are, in the period from August 24 to September 6, around 28% of cases; these were just over 20% in the previous two weeks. Thus in the weekly follow-up Iss-Ministry of Health. “In a context of advanced reopening of commercial activities (including places of aggregation) and greater mobility, now there are signs of greater transmission in the national territory in the home / family environment with circulation also in older people”, reads in The report.
Constant increase in transmission rate.
Slight but constant increase in the national transmission index (Rt) that exceeded the threshold of 1 around August 16, 2020, probably due to the reopening of May 4 and 18 and June 3, in the period of August 20 – September 2, 2020 l ‘Rt calculated in symptomatic cases is equal to 1.14 (95% CI: 0.71 – 1.53). However, the national transmission index must be interpreted with caution at this particular moment of the epidemic, the national RT must be interpreted taking into account the incidence data ”.
Trento, Sardinia and Puglia with higher Rt
There are five Regions plus the autonomous province of Trento that exceed the threshold of 1 for the transmissibility index, as indicated by the latest monitoring by the Ministry of Health and the ISS. Trento registers the highest value with 1.58, followed by Sardinia with 1.41, Puglia 1.21, Liguria with 1.13 and Friuli and Abruzzo both with 1.02. The lowest value is recorded in Molise (0.27), followed by Lazio with 0.52. Last week there were four regions beyond the value greater than 1, Abruzzo, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Puglia and Tuscany.
The rate of hospitalization and intensive care grows
Compared with the previous two weeks of follow-up (from August 17 to 30, 2020), an increase in the occupancy rate of dedicated beds was observed in both the medical and intensive care areas in almost all the Regions. At the national level, the occupancy rate in the medical area increased from 1 to 2%, while the occupancy rate in intensive care increased from 2% to 3%, with values higher than 5% for some regions. “Although no signs of overload of health services have yet been identified, the observed trend – reads the document on weekly monitoring – could soon be reflected in a greater commitment. In addition, the important and growing commitment of local services (Prevention Departments) to ensure that current outbreaks are identified and investigated promptly is confirmed.
