Sant’Elpidio a Mare (Fermo), September 11, 2020 – clear Matzuzzi and his daughter Daniela they drive Villa Gelsomini, the private retirement home where the Covid-19 outbreak developed. First a positive elderly guest who died after hospitalization, then 18 infected people among the facility staff and guests. Upon learning what was happening, they had to rush back from Sardinia, where they had been on vacation since Saturday.
“We left that everything was fine, but already on Monday – they say – the nurse informed us that one of our guests, over ninety years old and usually frail, had a slight fever. The doctor was called who, however, agreed to do the swab only on Tuesday. When, on Wednesday, the old woman tested positive for Covid, the guest was taken to the hospital and the control of all those present in the facility began ”.

Have all the guests been transferred?
“The positives were brought to Campofilone. We asked the Vast Area that even the negatives be transferred there, as we had difficulty handling them, as several of our operators are also positives. There are only two guests left in the structure, and they will be transferred tomorrow (today, ed) “.
How could all this have happened?
“We do not understand, or how it could have happened, or who could have allowed the virus to enter. The situation is very delicate, but our concern, for the moment, is for our guests.”
Have you been contacted by members of your family?
“Yes, and we thank them for the understanding they have shown us. During the pandemic, contact with their families was made through video calls. Recently, very few have arrived at the facility, after having passed all the controls.”
How did you face this period?
“As managers of the nursing home, we have respected and enforced all the rules, we have provided the operators with all the necessary assistance to carry out the work with maximum safety, incurring high costs for the management of the structure. Being a private structure, we are not entitled to the same supplies and aid as public facilities. In addition, we had already organized ourselves, buying all the necessary material, to face the next few months in complete safety, both for our guests and for those who work with us ”.
A regret?
“We would have liked to receive the solidarity of the mayor, even with a simple phone call, which did not exist, instead of seeing this situation exploited. We want to know that as a structure we have always tried and we are trying to do everything and more for our guests and our employees. “
