Israel, two-week lockdown
As expected, Israel’s coronavirus ministerial committee proposed shutting down the country overnight amid the peak of infections in recent weeks. The decision will be validated by the government on Sunday. In the initial phase, the closing will last two weeks and will refer to the festival of Rosh ha-Shanà (the Jewish New Year) and the fast of Kippur. If it has the desired effect, it will loosen very gradually. The start of the blockade will be determined by the government.
According to the media, it is foreseeable that it will take place after Wednesday, that is, the return of Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu from Washington, where the peace agreements between Israel and the United Arab Emirates will be signed on September 15. Once the closure takes effect, Israelis will not be able to leave their homes more than 500 meters. The education system will be shut down, as will all non-essential private businesses. Prayers may only be held outdoors or in spaces deemed appropriate by health authorities. Yesterday, before the Ministerial Committee decided on the closure, several hospitals had indicated to the government that they had reached a level of guard in the departments due to the coronavirus, especially in the areas most affected by the pandemic.
