The Vice-President of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič, has requested an extraordinary meeting of the EU-UK Joint Committee to find out what the UK government’s intentions are following the presentation of a new draft law on the UK internal market, that violates certain clauses. of the agreement reached last year on Brexit and on Northern Ireland.
Šefčovič called on the British government to amend the bill “as soon as possible and in any case by the end of the month” of September. He made clear that by introducing this bill, the UK has seriously damaged the relationship of trust between the European Union and the UK and that it is now up to the UK government to restore that trust. Furthermore, Šefčovič said that if the bill passes, it would constitute a violation of the Brexit agreements and international law. In the evening, Michael Gove, speaking on behalf of the British government, said it was “perfectly clear” that the government has no intention of changing the issues at hand.
With the presentation of the bill, the United Kingdom had confirmed that it had no intention of respecting some clauses of the Brexit agreement with the European Union, the so-called Withdrawal agreement, passed in early January by the British Parliament and therefore becomes law. The decision had been confirmed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson after days of indiscretion, and had immediately attracted much criticism: both for the way it was communicated, betraying mutual trust, as Šefčovič reiterated, and for the content of the law. that could violate some rules of international law.
