(ANSA) – ROME, SEPTEMBER 10 – Thousands of homeless refugees await the arrival of emergency aid to the island of Lesbos after the devastating fire two days ago that destroyed the Moria camp, the largest and most seedy in Greece.
A ferry was sent to the island, where a “state of emergency” was declared, to house the homeless.
Two buildings of the National Navy have also been enabled to increase the number of beds.
The Vice President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, is expected to make an inspection visit.
“Thousands of tents are now on the road,” said Greek Deputy Minister for Immigration Giorgos Koumoutsakos. Many families don’t even have a tent and spent a second night outdoors without even basic necessities.
Most of the thousands of migrants, who escaped from tents and cointaineros in the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, then stopped by the side of the road leading to the port of Mytilene, forming long lines of waiting. Some have taken refuge in the olive groves, others roam the villages in search of water. (HANDLE).
