He said that “the pandemic is God’s punishment for homosexuals,” now the Orthodox Patriarch Filaret has tested positive for Covid-19. The official website of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine reported this, explaining that the 91-year-old religious is hospitalized in stable condition.
“We inform you that His Holiness Patriarch Filaret de Kiec tested positive for Covid-19,” reads the note released by the Church, explaining that “the patriarch is now hospitalized and his health is considered satisfactory.”
In March, Filaret made headlines when, interviewed by Ukrainian television, he said that the coronavirus was “a punishment from God for same-sex marriages.”
Filaret’s words had been defined as “dangerous” by various associations. “Such statements are very harmful because they could lead to an increase in aggression, discrimination and violence against certain groups in a country where homophobic attacks are already widespread and where unions between people of the same sex are not legally recognized”, were the words quoted by Newsweek by Maria Guryeva, spokesperson for Amnesty International Ukraine.
