In the recently renewed domestic work contract between the unions in the sector and the employers’ associations representing families, innovations have been introduced especially for those families who need 24-hour help, such as those who have to care for the elderly who are not self-sufficient. “As of October 1, for families that need continuous assistance – explains Assindatcolf vice president Alessandro Lupi – it will be financially more convenient to hire a night watchman or a worker to replace the owner”.
“The agreement – say the unions – defines the classification of family helpers in four levels, each of which corresponds to two remuneration parameters, based on the knowledge and skills that are possessed in reference to the work required, surpassing the distinction Consolidated between home helpers, caregivers and caring for children and rather focusing on the context in which the work is carried out and making a clear distinction between workers who assist families on a day-to-day basis and those who do it caring for another human being. “.” The new contract – they conclude – closes a phase of extreme uncertainty for the category and the sector, prey to the strong presence of undeclared and undeclared work and puts the parties in the best conditions to continue discussions, even with the institutions, with the aim of making regular work more attractive in a sector that has given so much in the emergency phase and that is called to play a fundamental role in our country, in light of the estimates on demographic aging ”.
Allowance for children up to 6 years
The agreement provides for a monthly economic increase of 12 euros for the average level B Super a from January 1, 2021 and a compensation system from October 1, 2020 – from 100 euros to almost 116 euros – paid in addition to salary minimum to assist children up to the age of six and family assistants who care for more than one dependent person, thus recognizing the real workloads actually performed.

A new professional figure is also being launched, that of the trained assistant educator: an extra help for those who need to care, within the home, of people, including children, in difficult conditions because they suffer from mental disabilities or learning or relational disorders.
Less home help, more caregivers
Domestic work is increasingly becoming care work: home helpers decrease (-32.1% since 2012) and caregivers increase (+ 11.5% since 2012), a sign of the aging population in need assistance.
