“It’s been two weeks since I contacted ASL Napoli 1 to do the swab but I still don’t have the answer.” Mario Forino, a 48-year-old engineer, is one of many Neapolitans waiting to know whether or not a Covid infection has occurred. Waiting times for the nasopharyngeal test result, if any, are taking too long with the consequence of a completely blocked work and family life.
First of all, can you tell us why you ordered the tampon?
«On August 24, I returned from vacation to work at the company, in Naples, and in the evening I had dinner at the home of family friends. The wife of a friend, present that night, had undergone a control swab to perform an operation on her nasal septum, which fractured after a fall. The next day my husband called me on the phone and said he had bad news to tell me. The swab result was positive. How did you react to? I was at work at the time and luckily there are very strict rules in the office regarding the use of protective gear that we all wear. I must admit that I had a moment of disorientation and the first thing I did was break the news to the company and go straight home. It was August 25 and, once in home isolation, I also notified my GP, initiating the procedure to undergo the swab through the ASL service ».
She is still waiting for the test result. Can you explain what happened?
«On August 26 I was contacted by an ASL doctor who asked me about my health. I informed them that I had no symptoms and they told me they would come shortly to give me the swab. 5 days have passed. Medical personnel came to my home on the afternoon of August 30, undergoing a pharyngeal nasal swab. Since then I have had no more news and now they don’t even answer the phone.
Have you tried requesting the ASL to get the response from the buffer?
“At first I waited because they told me it would take 48 to 72 hours for the swab results to be known. I made the first phone calls to the ASL switchboards on September 2 and until September 4 they answered me saying that the result was not yet known. During the last conversation with the local health authority, again on September 4, they told me that the hypothesis that the tampon had been lost could not be ruled out. In the following days I could not speak to any contact person and even at the toll free number, I called insistently, no one answered. In practice, 14 days have passed since I requested the swab and 10 since it was given to me. I feel abandoned “.
How is this expectation lived?
“It is inevitable that waiting for the result of a Covid swab involves anguish and concern but I must admit that it is not the aspect that weighs the most. I feel in prison and completely isolated even from my dearest loved ones. My wife and 17-year-old daughter were forced not to return from the holidays and are in our second home, outside of Naples. My mother-in-law leaves me shopping in the elevator and I am becoming addicted to television, not to mention being absent from work.
Did you also have problems at work?
“I was forced to leave for 14 days, protected by the medical certificate that expires today. Not having received a hyssop response, the certificate was extended by a week, but it is precious time that I am wasting both in the company and in my family life. It is not yet possible to have such long procedures to monitor infections, there is something to improve and I would like my story to stimulate all health institutions to accelerate times ”.
