(ANSA) – ROME, SEPTEMBER 9 – Thousands of migrants have fled the Moria camp, on the Greek island of Lesbos, under confinement, after several fires destroyed much of the structure. Kathimerini newspaper reports. According to preliminary information, the flames were sparked by migrants who rebelled against the coronavirus isolation rules, but police have not even confirmed whether firefighters said they had “encountered resistance” from some migrants.

About 12,500 people live in the Moria camp and the surrounding area, where further restrictions were imposed last week after a Somali resident tested positive for the coronavirus.

“We saw that the fire spread through Moria and lasted all night. The entire camp was engulfed in flames, causing a massive flight of people aimlessly.

Scared children and surprised parents. We are now working to respond to their needs, ”said Marco Sandrone, project leader of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in Lesbos.

“The people of Moria have been living in inhumane conditions for years. It is essential now to guarantee their transfer to safe accommodation,” warned the MSF manager.
