The Moria refugee camp in Lesbos is evacuated after a fire that, according to local firefighters, has broken out in several places for reasons yet to be clarified. The camp on the Greek island, a crossroads of migratory flows, has been partially evacuated. Currently, the facility accommodates 12,700 asylum seekers (four times its theoretical capacity) and is the largest in Europe.

At first it seemed that the fires were the result of a protest against the confinement imposed to reduce the chances of contagion from Covid-19, but the Greek authorities have denied this hypothesis raised by local media. The firefighters, however, would have encountered resistance during the rescue. So far, no one has been injured, but thousands of migrants fleeing the structure are said to be.

The restrictions were imposed after a Somali refugee tested positive for the virus. So far 35 cases have been detected and now the island’s health authorities have planned a battery of tests on a larger number of people residing in the camp.
