“Having exhausted all other means to assert my rights, I am forced to resort to a total hunger strike and a refusal of therapy.” Cesare Battisti, the former terrorist of the proletarians armed by communism, writes this in a letter sent to his lawyer Davide Steccanella. The lawyer clarifies that Battisti, extradited to Italy after his arrest in Bolivia where he fled Brazil, has spent more than a year and a half in solitary confinement in the Oristano prison “in fact, completely illegitimate since it was six months.” it was discounted in June 2019 ».

The protest: “Little food and too much fat”

Battisti is serving two life sentences for the murders of Pierluigi Torregiani, Lino Sabbadin, Andrea Campagna and Antonio Santoro committed between 1978 and 1979. In July he had protested “bad food, too much fried food and fat. I have hepatitis and prostatitis. “The vice of the Penitentiary Administration meticulously implemented by the prison authorities of Oristano,” writes Battisti, “defiantly resisted all my attempts to restore legality and the due grant of rights provided by law, but always stubbornly denied. My complaints Written or oral messages addressed to this Directorate, to the Control Magistrate, to public opinion were of no use. Cesare Battisti is not even allowed to be surprised if some laws are suspended in his case: this is what they have made me understand, in unequivocal terms, different authorities ”.

Requests

“Asking for treatment equal to that of any other prisoner,” he continues, “is a continuous, exhausting contest that involves the most ordinary acts of my daily life: air time; forced and unjustified isolation; insufficient medical performance; the arbitrary retention of literary texts; questions systematically ignored; objects of various utility and negative work tools, even if they are provided for by the prison system ”. Hence the decision to go on a hunger strike to request both the transfer to a penitentiary center “where relations with relatives are facilitated and my classification in the High Security (AS2) regime for terrorists is revised, since they no longer exist in fact, the risk conditions that would justify it ”.

“Good behavior”

“During his imprisonment, Battisti gave proof of participation in the re-education work, also registering regular conduct,” wrote the Cagliari Surveillance Magistrate, María Cristina Lampis, in the provision with which she granted the former terrorist the reduction of the fine of 45 days scheduled for each semester discounted in case of good conduct.
