“They were furies,” says Lorenzo to those who ask him what he remembers about the last moments of his friend Willy’s life. Anyone who has seen a child screaming in pain, struggling to breathe, being slaughtered by an angry herd, in front of their eyes, will not easily forget those images. Lorenzo and all the others who witnessed the beating of the young man of Cape Verdean origin – who died from kicks and blows received after defending a friend in an argument – are in shock. For all that violence, unheard of and senseless, that ended the life of a 21-year-old boy in a few minutes. For the naturalness with which all this happened. As if it were normal to surround a young man, hit him fiercely, not stop even when he desperately shouts: “Please, stop, I can’t breathe anymore.” A few moments, then the despair of those who were with the young man, the rescue ”. Everything was very fast – adds the boy who was with Willy when he was attacked – I stayed close to him for an hour, maybe less. I do not remember very well. I’m still in shock, I haven’t slept for two days and I relive those moments. These things are not forgotten ”.
Those “furies” who were furious, with two other people, with kicks and punches against the young Italian-Cape Verdean -and after having massacred him they continued drinking beer quietly and posting humorous content on Facebook- are two brothers. Everyone, in and around Colleferro, knows Marco and Gabriele Bianchi. They are in their early 20s and have a violent life: there is not only a passion for MMA, a sport that mixes boxing and martial arts that is practiced in a cage, in their daily life. There are precedents of injuries, beatings, arguments with anyone. Many have had to deal with them: “Those two brothers here knew them all. For two years they have been fighting and hitting in the same way, they have been the authors of other beatings ”. To tell it is Alessandro, another friend of Willy. He experienced the two brothers’ way of life first-hand: “I had a fight with one of them a few months ago because he was bothering a friend of mine. The anger is that it is not the first time they do this. It could have been avoided, ”he continues. Then the bitter conclusion: “You can’t die at 21 like this.” Some people remember other episodes: “One of the detainees – says a boy from Colleferro – some time ago in Artena attacked a policeman who invited him to put on a mask. They are bullies ”.
It is not only the youngest who explain that what happened in the early morning of September 6 is not a bolt from nowhere. The signs were there. And perhaps such an absurd murder could really have been prevented: “We didn’t sleep here. More controls are needed in the area of Piazza Italia where there are pubs ”. Says one of the inhabitants of the area. “I am a mother and it could have been my son. We would need patrols that operate at night and that they control. Who says it can’t happen again? ”. And again: “Here the weekend is a ‘slaughter’ all without masks, gathered and drinking. The police are few and they cannot do it, they have to increase them ”.
To remember that it is the entire community that must question what happened is the Bishop of Velletri, Mons. Vincenzo Apicella: “We are all co-responsible – denounces the bishop -. Where do the viruses of pride, violence, cowardice, contempt for life, stupidity come from that generate these tragedies and despair entire families and communities? Every day we are sitting in a powder keg, which can suddenly explode and of which we are not aware ”.
Ex-post reflections helped raise awareness, but little else. The fact is, Willy, whom everyone remembers as a decent, educated and hardworking worker, died after being beaten by a pack who thought he might be playing. And there is a family and a country that now mourn him. Unarmed and desperate. Some vent their anger under the social profiles of the Bianchi brothers, with insults and threats even to the detriment of their relatives. Added to the violence that killed Willy is the hatred of those who cry out for revenge.
Meanwhile, the investigation continues. Prosecutor Luigi Paoletti will assign the post for the autopsy tomorrow. The attackers are currently facing murder charges, but if the examination reveals more details, the charge could turn into voluntary manslaughter. Those arrested, not only the Bianchi brothers, but also Mario Pincarelli and Francesco Belleggia, will be heard by the magistrate on Thursday. Meanwhile, word has come in of a fifth suspect. For all, however, racial or political reasons are excluded. What researchers aseptically call “futile reasons” remain behind a death that deeply wounds a seemingly quiet provincial area. A death that, the citizens of the area repeat, “could have been prevented.”
