On this first Monday in September, thousands of children will return to class after the long absence imposed by the Coronavirus restrictions. The little ones will open the dance, children from 0 to 6 years old: in many Italian cities, in fact, kindergartens and kindergartens start today. The September race was the big theme of the summer. Returning to face-to-face teaching was the objective shared by the government and the regions (net of contrasts). If it is true, in fact, that presence is not enough to do a good teaching, it is equally true that continuing with distance lessons as during emergency shutdown it would mean putting the future of 8 million students in crisis.

Although Phase 1 should be a starting point to rethink the training of most teachers. “We are committed to minimizing the risk of contagion,” said Education Minister Lucía Azzolina on the eve of her return. After weeks of hectic work to prepare for the September dates, now is the time to put what has been established into action. “The school is not a fairy place, aseptic, where the risk is zero”, acknowledges the minister. That is why we work with the Higher Institute of Health to have a protocol and establish what to do every time there is an infection ”.

Who goes back to school as of September 7

Among the regions that have decided to restart before the date indicated by the Ministry of Education (September 14) is also Lombardy, the region most affected by the Covid-19 epidemic. After some administrative hesitation (also due to the junta’s political friction with Rome), the Lombard cities have stepped on the accelerator.

Numerous institutions will also be reopened in other regions, such as Emilia-Romagna, Umbria, Marche and Sicily. Also in Veneto, the municipality of Vo ‘Euganeo (Padua), famous for being one of the first red zones in Italy, opens its doors early: kindergarten will begin today, and primary and secondary school will begin on Monday the 9th. As explained by the mayor, the decision to open before the rest of the region also derives from the fact that on September 14 the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella will be in Vo ‘to inaugurate the new school year.

Instead, the school year is starting in Toto in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, where schools of all types and levels will be able to reopen their doors starting today. Even the comprehensive Institute of Mortara, in the Pavese area, which includes the primary and secondary school, will resume the lessons in person from today, as well as the schools of Pordenone, in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
