Dear Director, I am writing to you after waiting in vain for the government’s responses on the secret study on the effects of Covid in Italy. A study publicly confirmed by an executive from the Ministry of Health on April 21 and that dates back to the first weeks of 2020, while other declassified minutes bring to light more disturbing details about the management of the emergency. Summarizing. At Palazzo Chigi they had alarming elements about the consequences of the Covid in our country, but the prime minister assumed the enormous responsibility of not sharing information officially, even with the presidents of the region. Worse still: a few days later, the government gave China 18 tons of dresses and masks – with an enthusiastic press release from Farnesina – and on February 21 the prime minister assured that “everything is under control.” We know how it ended: a dramatic shortage of gloves, gowns, masks and respirators that in the emergency phase was the task of the central government to find, not of the individual Regions.
The same government that proclaimed a state of emergency and who has accustomed Italians to unprecedented communicative interference, with a barrage of live press conferences and all over the news, has not said a word about the secret study. From Conte and the other ministers not a word, a justification, an answer. Nothing. Absolute silence. The only exception was Roberto Speranza, who was quick to deny it by speaking of “journalistic misrepresentation,” despite the fact that the news had been confirmed by an executive from his own department. The more time passes, the more disturbing details emerge about the government’s action: it is now established that the Scientific Technical Committee had suggested closing the municipalities of Bergamo with red zones, so much so that they sent the army from Rome to shield Nembro and Alzano. Lombard, but then Palazzo Chigi decided otherwise, ignoring another suggestion from experts or a less rigid closure in some areas of the country rather than full closure.
The last declassified minutes reveal a series of errors and they tell of the furious disputes between the experts and the commissioner Domenico Arcuri, who despite too many delays and follies was chosen to address the issue of the reopening of schools together with a clearly inadequate minister like Lucía Azzolina. The government can no longer remain silent: we will ask to inform Parliament. Given that the executive had a confidential study on the effects of the virus, why did he not share the information with other institutional interlocutors? Why didn’t you immediately find masks, gowns, and respirators, but instead shipped tons of them to China? Why did you ignore CTS’s suggestions for red zones? Why on February 21 did the premier say “everything is under control”? It is very unusual, Director, that those who have claimed to occupy the media stage of the emergency with unified social networks and networks in Big Brother mode – also to launch unacceptable attacks on the opposition – now opt for absolute silence. The escape. The ambiguity. As the center-right, we are still waiting for the government to involve us as the head of state also wanted and the prime minister himself guarantees to discuss solutions to the country’s many problems.
Now the priorities are work, the economy, school, the defense of borders. But there is also a demand for truth and transparency that needs answers. The government and the majority, on the other hand, are concerned about the electoral law and terrified by the outcome of the regional elections. In this sense, the position of Democratic Party Secretary Nicola Zingaretti is simply staggering: he is obsessed with armchairs, government scales and the voting system in a desperate attempt to cling to power. The government must explain to Parliament and the entire country why it has kept silent about the risks of the virus and has faced the emergency with dramatic superficiality. He owes it to Italians, to those who have suffered, to those who are gone, to their families.
