Citrobacter koseri in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care rooms of the hospital, which between April 2017 and July 2020 caused serious brain injuries to 5 newborns and the death of another 4 The news was released yesterday afternoon by the management of the Integrated University Hospital of Verona (AOUIV), that is, the health center to which the hospital belongs. The suspended doctors are Dr. Chiara Bovo, medical director of the hospital, Dr. Giovanna Ghirlanda, medical director of the center, and Dr. Paolo Biban, director of Pediatrics.
The Commission has not been able to establish the causes of the presence of the bacteria but has detected its presence in the aerators of some taps in neonatal and pediatric intensive care and on the internal and external surfaces of the bottles used by two newborns who tested positive. . The Commission also found hygienic-sanitary deficiencies, safety protocols not respected and an underestimation of the problem: the hospital had not communicated this to either the Region or Azienda Zero, the body that administers the Venetian health system, as it should have done.
