France has closed 22 of its 62,000 schools since face-to-face lessons resumed on Tuesday, due to coronavirus infections. Of these, 10 were on the French island of Runion in the Indian Ocean, where access to medical care is poorer than in mainland France and the number of coronavirus patients in hospitals has increased in recent weeks.
Minister of Education Jean-Michel Blanquer
Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer told radio Europe 1 that overall French schools have reported around 250 suspected coronavirus cases a day since they began to reopen on Tuesday. Not all of these cases turn out positive, but once a suspicion is reported, schools must follow extensive government protocol that can include sending an entire class home for online learning or closing the entire school. Blanquer further explained that a hundred classes are closed but this changes every day. However – continued the minister – closed schools are a relatively low number compared to the total number of schools in France and therefore the situation remains under control.
Back to class
More than 12 million students returned to school in France on Tuesday, despite some parent-teacher unions expressing concern about the continued circulation of the coronavirus. Yesterday, more than seven thousand positives were confirmed by the French Ministry of Health.
