CAVALLERMAGGIORE (CUNEO). When he saw his brother Davide suddenly collapse to the ground in the nearly full silos, he did not hesitate and climbed down from the roof to desperately try to save him. An action dictated by the heart, but deadly. As soon as he hit the ground, the gases from the fermentation of the corn saturated his lungs. Now Francesco Gennero struggles between life and death in the intensive care unit of the Savigliano hospital, in very serious conditions. Davide, on the other hand, is gone, one more victim of the work of this country.
A tragedy consumed in a few moments, yesterday morning on the family farm, in the village of Madonna del Pilone de Cavallermaggiore, a small village on the Cuneo plain. Davide, 22, and Francesco Gennero, 25, were working in the storage of cut corn the day before. With them were his father Claudio and his uncle Vittorio. A “routine” job in the large company specializing in livestock for the production of milk.
But something went wrong. Later, Father Claudio managed to get the children out of the silos and into the open air, on the roof, at a height of forty meters. He began to massage them, waiting for help to arrive. Firefighters and medical team 118, who were there a few minutes later, tried the impossible. But David’s heart did not beat again. And Francesco never regained consciousness: he was transferred by helicopter to the Santissima Annunziata di Savigliano, where he still stands today.
A trivial accident, but a drama difficult to bear. Shocked, father and uncle tried to tell the police and officials of the Spresal, the Labor Security Service, the incident. The structure and the area where the accident occurred were seized and an investigation was opened to verify the correct operation of the ventilation and safety systems of the silos. Most likely, but investigations are awaited, Davide died asphyxiated by fermentation gases. The conditions of Francesco, who outlived his brother but was without oxygen for a long time, are worrying.
Two brothers, two workers, Davide and Francesco were the future of the Gennero company. The two oldest children of a large family, five children, all very attached to their father’s work. Davide had graduated from the Don Bosco de Lombriasco agricultural institute, and had become a full-fledged country man. Always together, at work, the two brothers loved the countryside as one loves something authentic and genuine, and as evidenced by the many photographs that portray them in the field or on the tractor. These days, on the farm, times were busy: corn was being threshed and storing chopped corn plants, the so-called silage, which is collected and stored as animal feed to be used in the coming months. .
Davide was very fond of his village, Madonna del Pilone, a handful of houses and farms along the route from Cavallermaggiore to Bra. The mayor of the countryand Davide Sannazzaro, who lives in the nearby village of Foresto, was one of the first to arrive at the place, now it is devastated: “A tragedy, not only a family one, but that affects the entire community. Davide was very attached to his village, where he worked as a volunteer in various fields and of which he was a benchmark as the village head of the Palio. Let us pray now for Francis, he must continue living ».
