Marina di Massa, the case of the dead sisters: in the article the images of the surveillance cameras acquired by the prosecutor. Strong gusts, but no air cone
MASS. Not only the data, now there are also images of the bad weather of Sunday morning. Surveillance cameras at the campsite next to Verde Mare, where the Lassiri sisters died, filmed it. And they clear all doubts about the hypothesis of a tornado that passed over Marina di Massa. Images that were acquired yesterday morning by the Prosecutor’s Office.

In a particular shot, which frames a row of trees that protect a part of the camp, something is noticeable.
“First a snort that inflated the canvas structures that cover the bungalow, then a thud like that of a hood closing.” These are the words that hours later the tragedy of the two sisters comes from an auditory witness who slept a few meters from their tent. Let’s take the first part of the sentence and compare it with the video recorded by the surveillance cameras of the next camp. The row of trees we have mentioned is constantly moving by the wind. Sometime something happens. I inhale it.
The scene comes to life, the branches seem to suddenly light up, almost as if something exploded behind them. A blue mattress and other inflatables appear, floating moved by an invisible hand in an imaginary and fairly constant line. The video clock shows the time: it is 7.40, it could be the gust that started the poplar that fell on the tent.
The meteorological expert explains: “In the video you can clearly see a certain constancy in the direction of the wind blowing from the sea, therefore from the south-southwest. Therefore, these are linear and non-turbulent / rotating wind gusts; In technical jargon they are defined as “downburst” bursts and are often associated with the approach of storm cells from the sea, as happened on Sunday morning. ‘
In short, a meteorological phenomenon that can undoubtedly be of local intensity (in line with the measured streak of 64 km / h also detected by the local meteorological reports) but that has nothing to do with the technical-scientific term “trumpet of air “or” tornado. Very different in trend.
As anyone can see by examining the many tornado videos posted on youtube, by these we mean a whirlpool phenomenon, with therefore a clearly visible cone of air touching the ground from the cloud (funnel sometimes several hundred meters in diameter), associated with very violent winds that rotate counterclockwise and that by definition exceed 100 km / h.
In our area, for example, an iconic whirlwind occurred on August 28, 1977 (the famous “Cinquale tornado”) with massive damage spread across the entire coastline between Marina di Massa and Forte dei Marmi.
The video of the camp, now in the hands of the investigators, should definitely close the controversy for the unexpected and out of the ordinary.
