A freighter carrying 43 crew members and 6,000 head of cattle has disappeared in the East China Sea off the coast of Japan after being hit by Typhoon Maysak. The Japanese Coast Guard rescued a man who was adrift in a life jacket. The search for the rest of the crew and ship continues with planes and patrol boats, but is hampered by stormy sea conditions and heavy rains.

The crew of the merchant ship, which is called Gulf Livestock 1, includes 39 sailors from the Philippines, two New Zealanders and two Australians. The Japanese Coast Guard said the man who was rescued was a Filipino crew member. The man said the boat’s engine broke down and the boat was hit by a wave and capsized.

New Zealand’s Foreign Ministry said Gulf Livestock 1, a 139-meter Panamanian-flagged freighter built in 2002, left the country on August 14 and was due to arrive in China 17 days later. The ship launched the distress signal from the waters west of Amami Oshima Island in southwestern Japan.
