School, the “quick call” expires today. There is fear of the lack of teachers.

On September 2, the deadline for submitting the “quick call” application ends, but this measure may not solve the problem of the risk of understaffing when the lessons are resumed. Concerns about possible teacher “hole” due to coronavirus-related fears: many are presenting medical certificates

The Italian schools reopened yesterday, September 1, for the teachers’ colleges, the last adjustments of the classrooms, the recovery of the learning of more than 500,000 students, some with distance lessons, others in presence (THE SCHOOL SPECIAL). But this first step towards reopening in mid-September does not remove fears of a possible teacher shortage. Today, Wednesday September 2, is the last day to submit requests for the “speed call”, a measure that may not be enough to resolve the problems. Many shadows remain on the presence of staff, especially teachers, but also school collaborators: the increase in coronavirus infections (THE SPECIAL – LIVE UPDATES) in recent weeks is in fact raising the alarm in the teaching staff , especially in the later with the years. In school, the percentage of those over 55 years old is 40-45% and that of those over 62 years old is 171,000. And there are many teachers who are presenting a medical certificate (THE REOPENING OF SCHOOLS IN EUROPE).

Unions fear that speed dialing will not fix the situation. According to data from the Uil school, in Campania almost half of the available places will remain empty: more than 2,500 places out of the 4,600 authorized. In Lombardy almost two thousand places in support of middle schools. An image that is repeated with different numbers also in Puglia, Emilia Romagna and Veneto. “The quick call will not affect the insecurity that is still a drama,” observes the secretary of the Uil School, Pino Turi (SCHOOL IN THE HOME: WHAT IT IS AND WHY MANY PARENTS ARE CHOOSING).

The fears of the unions

“There is a certain fear” of going back to school “but it is motivated by the uncertainty of communications: mask yes or no, fragile yes or no: all this accentuates the concerns of those who feel threatened from the point of view of health” says the leader of the Uil Scuola, Pino Turi. “These days most teachers meet remotely but problems will explode when they return to service and this is due to a lack of certainties,” he adds. “We need guidelines and rules for fragile workers: managers cannot operate otherwise,” says CISL secretary Scuola Maddalena Gissi. The school world is waiting for a circular that dictates the rules for requesting exemptions. Can the fragile worker work remotely? Can you work with a small group of children? Can he be replaced by a substitute? Are you taking advantage of the illness or do you consider yourself to be in the hospital? These are some of the many questions school leaders ask themselves. At the same time, the postponement of the extraordinary contest – scheduled for autumn – and the ordinary one – whose date has not yet been hypothesized – cause gaps in the workforce. According to the unions, more than 50,000 permanent teachers are missing, while more than 10,000 teachers who have received specific training for support may have already been hired (STATUS INDICATIONS IN MASKS).

School: Iss, Covid manager training begins

Meanwhile, the training of the Higher Institute of Health and the Ministry of Education for the person responsible for Covid in schools has begun. Two courses, remote and organized on a platform capable of accommodating up to 70,000 students among teachers, school personnel and health professionals to monitor and manage possible cases of Covid-19 and outbreaks in schools. “The first day of school will bring great emotions – wrote the Minister of Education Lucía Azzolina in a letter to all the school staff – we transmit serenity to our children and their families. Let’s help them know better and respect the health rules. We explained to the students that the school made it and couldn’t wait to welcome them back. Because we are all in school for them. And we are all anxious to finally look into their eyes and say “Welcome back and welcome back.”

Universities are divided

A day of restart, yesterday, also for the universities: in fact, in the morning the admission tests to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine were held, with ten thousand enrolled for 890 places. On September 3 it will be the turn of Medicine: more than 65 thousand candidates for 13,072 places. A problem that could open up is that of those who would have wanted to participate but cannot do so because in isolation, even if only due to a contact with a positive in Covid. The university ministry is looking for a solution to this problem that has not yet been found.
