A second increase in Covid-19 infections in the UK in autumn-winter could cause as many as 85,000 deaths. This was revealed by a government study revealed by the BBC. According to the study by scientific advisory body Sage, some restrictions could be reintroduced and maintained until March 2021, although schools would remain open.
The document specifies that this is a “worst-case scenario” scenario, not necessarily destined to happen even though there is a lot of uncertainty right now. The study was prepared to help authorities plan morgues and funeral services and avoid being overwhelmed in the months to come.
The document was prepared on the assumption that schools will remain open and that the government’s traceability, isolation and quarantine measures will only be 40% effective in reducing the spread of the coronavirus.
