A rather particular story, the one that concerns a middle-aged couple, who left Veneto in complete blockade, contravening all the provisions. The particularity? The two, convinced terrapiattisti, had left with the desire to reach Finis Terrae, the last frontier of creation. However, they were shipwrecked in Ustica, Sicily..
To tell the story, Salvatore Zichichi, a doctor at the Office of Maritime Health of the Ministry of Health, forced to handle the situation from his presidium in Palermo. He says that “the two left Veneto during the confinement for Lampedusa, violating all restrictions. At Termini Imerese, near Palermo, they sold their car and bought a boat, determined to go to the island ”. He then goes on to explain how they moved during the journey, explaining “that they were oriented with a compass, an instrument that works on the basis of Earth’s magnetism, a principle that they, as flat-earthers, must reject.” The two ended up in Ustica, on the opposite side. in Palermo, exhausted and thirsty, to the amazement of Mayor Aldo Messina, the police and the coast guard.
As if that were not enough, the arrival was not the best, thanks to the reluctance of both of them towards all types of telephone systems and each of the mobile phones. “Watch out for you guys, get rid of your phone or get away!” They yelled at everyone who came near them. In the end, they were forced into a preventive quarantine for fifteen days, to be treated in their own boat, with an attempt to escape to continue their journey. The alarm came back early because the ship was sinking in the waves without moving forward.
But it doesn’t stop there. “A few days later – says Zichichi – they try to escape again, they end up in the house of a mythomaniac who claimed to be positive for Covid but luckily it was not.” A new quarantine is required. With coronavirus measures easing, the two finally left Sicily and returned home.
