Three months after those fairy tales on the lawn, his cell phone keeps ringing.Francesca Sivieri, 43, kindergarten teacher, remained the same. Back from vacation: a week at the beach with her husband Francesco and their children Pietro and Matteo: Seven days with the family and now ready to go with the same energy. Her passion for school is a burning passion. She calls it a vocation, she says that beyond her job she couldn’t do anything else. that same passion to make her wait for us to go back to school in her presence. Francesca smiles when a text message from a parent reminds her of that image from May 25: she in jeans and a T-shirt sitting on the grass and placing a suitcase full of books on the ground, her little students from Prato who hear her legs crossed already distance. The first story and that meeting after the confinement interrupted by the controversy of a trade unionist who accused her of having acted against all security regulations, passing off her colleagues as homeless. A mother writes to him after three months. She knew and regretted it, like the parents of the others: the teacher Francesca is leaving. Explain to Messenger Service: Before that episode, I had requested and obtained a transfer to the Bartolini Integral Institute in Vaiano. Now my children are older, they no longer need their mother at the front door. I change schools and go away from home. I need new stimuli, this has been a year of budgets and I want to get back in the game.
After that gesture, immortalized by a photograph that has circulated on the web, Francesca had become a symbol. In the Italy of confinement, of children without school, I felt useful for my students, who had the right to find them a space, a place to meet again. I got my salary and was able to continue paying the bills from there the idea of inventing something to continue being there. Doing what I did made me feel good, even more so when I received the solidarity of all of Italy. No criticism of colleagues: everyone is free to act as they see fit. Of course, knowing that many other teachers in Italy have followed my example made me happy…. From school, however, there is no applause. Three months after that day, not even a call from my manager: not for support, not for criticism. Not listening to anyone, after twelve years in this school, it hurt a bit. And he adds, some old school colleagues understood my methods, others despised me. Everything is a question of vocation, of passion, not of heating the chair, he reiterates.
And so it will go, Francesca, but it will go away again with the same enthusiasm. At his home in Prato there is a folder full of letters and drawings: his children sent them to him after finding the teacher on television. If I fear that in September the school will not return to it? Inevitable. It’s not in my nature to be pessimistic, but I only hear indications on benches and structures. I believe that now we must dedicate time and energy to children: How are they, how they have lived these months How can we intervene in their socialization: the pandemic has accustomed them to distance, not to touch, and the little ones feel it. The important thing? We have to start over, it is unthinkable not to go back to class. Children need human contact after so long at home. This is the real urgency.
What is missing more? The relationship with my class. In kindergarten you see children grow up, in a moment you find them boys with beards and mustaches. Always keep something of them: a memory, a gesture, an episode. I miss school in my day. A passing year will open: without knowing what awaits me in the new school, it is also difficult to plan. Every now and then, however, I get excited. Silence. I get excited when I meet parents at the supermarket, in the park or in the bar, and they ask me to stay. But life was made up of encounters and goodbye. I think I was lucky for this piece of road with my little ones. Seeing each other again won’t be difficult. That image on the grass, then, will remain in our memory.
