Last night, an HH-212 helicopter from the 80th CSAR Center (Combat Search and Rescue), employed by the 15th Wing of the Italian Air Force, carried out the transport of a patient with pneumonia and positive for COVID-19 .

The sixty-nine-year-old man was transported at the request of the Sassari prefecture from Olbia to Cagliari, where he landed at 18:30 after an hour’s flight, and was then immediately admitted to the “G. Brotzu “.

The patient was transported in biocontainment aboard a special insulating stretcher provided by 118 and constantly assisted by a medical team. It is the first time that an HH-212 helicopter of the Italian Air Force has been used to carry out a transport in biocontainment.

The 15th Stormo of the Italian Air Force, with its helicopters and its crews specialized in Search and Rescue, has contributed to the activities to combat the Coronavirus from the first stages of the emergency, carrying out the transport of patients, medical equipment and medical material .

In particular, the HH-101 helicopters, also supported by the crews of the 9th Stormo di Grazzanise, were used as “flying ambulances” thanks to their ability to transport patients in biocontainment mode using ATI (Aircraft Transit Isolator).
