A poplar tree hit a tent during a storm while the family slept. The departure had been postponed due to bad weather. A witness: “I heard a bang and a loud bang”
MARINA DI MASSA. Two hours later there was only a gust of wind that moved the white fins of the gutted carp sleepily. At 7.33 he had passed with a completely different intensity over the Verdemare Marina di Massa campsite, half asleep, strong and tense as to uproot a poplar tree to knock it over the tent of a family on vacation. There, one day before the end of the holidays, Jannat and Malak Lassiri, aged 3 and 14, were crushed by the tree. The night before, they had asked mom and dad to sleep with them, because in bad weather they didn’t want to be alone in their colored curtain mounted next to them. The parents had said yes.
The Lassiri family is the last remaining in the rectangle of grass surrounded by bungalows on the campsite a few hundred meters from the beaches of the Tyrrhenian Sea. There are seven from Turin: her father Hicham 43, her mother Aziz Fatima, 36, the three daughters Nissrin 19, Malak 14 and Jannat 3 and their son Tari, 9 years old. They have been there since August 18, with them is the uncle, the seventh member of the family. Upon awakening, they would prepare for the last day of vacation.
The The family squeezes in on Saturday night, to give way to the fear that the little ones will sleep six in the tent. Malak and Jannat go to the air mattresses on the left side, closest to the poplar. The uncle sleeps in the nearby store. Rain and gusts of wind are the roof and walls of this night’s weather alert.
“A blow that inflated the curtain, then a strong blow, like that of a hood closing”: this happens at 7.33, is registered by the semi-alert senses of a man who is staying in a wooden house next to the Lassiri. Then there is only screaming. In half a minute, everyone in the rectangle around the campground wakes up and runs out of the houses. A poplar fell on the family tent. In a tangle of cloth and wood, Dad and Uncle fight to get little Jannat and Malak out, embedded. The heavy trunk does not lift, the other campers call for help.
The wind is evil, it calms down only two hours later. So the rescue helicopter 118 cannot land, while the onboard anesthetist and the pilot are condemned to figure out how to get off. First aid arrives from the ground, two self-medication and an ambulance with the firefighters. Jannat is already in cardiac arrest and doctors remain in the field to attempt resuscitation. The sister has a weird, weak heartbeat, so she is fired first. However, both come to the emergency room with cardiocirculatory arrest. Despite an hour and a half of trying for Jannat, there is nothing to do: she dies of hemorrhagic shock. The fractures and abdominal and thoracic damage are too serious.me.
Malak, on the other hand, suffers a cardiac arrest during the transfer to the hospital. The news arrives before her in the room and those who were on duty since night – anesthesiologists and emergency doctors – decide to stay to give a hand to their colleagues on duty. They manage to restart her heart, but it is useless. The trunk hit her on the head, causing severe bleeding and she was also pronounced dead. The other 5 were unharmed, except for the 19-year-old sister, who was slightly injured.
The investigations are in the hands of the carabinieri led by Colonel Massimo Rosati and the prosecutor Roberta Moramarco. We will try to understand if it was foreseeable that the tree, due to the conditions in which it was found, could fall in case of bad weather, considering that there were spaces for tents underneath. The hypotheses of the crime: homicide and serious injuries, but at the moment nobody is registered in the register of suspects.
The police listened to the head of the facility, Amilcare Dal Pino. The relatives of the little ones go to the hospital in the afternoon, where they are awaited for more terrible tasks.
They will still stay in Massa for a few days, and the Municipality will offer accommodation in a hostel in the center. The father and uncle, in a family Volkswagen, returned to the camp after hours to retrieve the remaining son with friends. Hicham Lassiri is surprised. The abandoned head on the headrest of the car stares at the curtain where the normality of these days of vacation has turned into a nightmare.
