On Sunday there were parliamentary elections and, according to exit polls, the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) would have won 30 seats out of 81 in the Montenegrin parliament, which would not be enough for him to govern alone. The DPS has been in government for almost thirty years and in these elections it would have obtained 35 percent of the votes, compared to 33 percent for the alliance of pro-Serbian nationalist parties “For the future of Montenegro”. Another opposition force, “Peace for our nation”, would have obtained 12.5 percent of the vote. However, the vote has not yet concluded and official results are awaited.

The very high turnout, 75.9%, would have benefited the opposition parties. Although the DPS achieved a lower result than in the elections four years ago, when it won 35 seats, Deputy Nela Savkovic assured that the Social Democrats will be able to form a new government together with their traditional allies among the minority parties that participated in the elections of independently, without being part of the main coalitions. To stay in government now, the DPS will have to ask for the support of some smaller parties, but on Sunday night the leader of “For the future of Montenegro”, Zdravko Krivokapic, said that, as far as he is concerned, the “Djukanovic regime” fell and his coalition won the elections.

President Milo Djukanovic’s DPS has ruled Montenegro since 1991 and led the country to independence from Serbia in 2006, accession to the European Union, and entry into NATO.
