FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
WASHINGTON High tension and clashes in Portland, Oregon, between Trump supporters and the violent fringes of the “Black Lives Matter” movement: one dead. The police have not yet released the official version of events.
The reconstruction that we have so far is based on various testimonials collected by the media. On Saturday, August 29, around 8:30 p.m., a fight begins in the area of
city center. Screams, threats, and then a gunshot. Some videos recorded with the frame of a mobile phone man lying on the asphalt, in front of a garage entrance: he wears a hat from the “Patriot Prayer,” a far-right organization founded in 2016 by 36-year-old Joey Gibson to support Donald Trump and “liberate conservatives on the West Coast ». A local television reports that someone saw a group of youths approach the victim. At one point one of the attackers he took out a gun è would have fired a single shot. Then he hid the weapon, fleeing on foot.
The agents arrived almost immediately, but there was nothing left to do.
It was the perhaps inevitable conclusion of a day out of control, with the city at the mercy of two warlike factions and increasingly dangerously equipped.
Since the morning at least 600 cars, trucks, pick-ups have gathered in the parking lot of a shopping center. American flags, “pro Trump and Pence” banners. They formed a long procession and headed for the ring road. On board the vehicles, enthusiastic but peaceful sympathizers and haunting figures alternate with bulletproof vests, sticks, paint guns, irritating sprays. It is a demonstration action in the city that Trump has pointed to as an example of the surrender of the Democrats “to the anarchists, the vandals and the destroyers”, without any distinction from the overwhelming majority of Black Lives Matter activists.
The militants who have been protesting against police abuses for three months were waiting for the Trumpian caravan on the access ramps to the highway. Insults, slogans from both sides. No serious accidents. But at dusk the motorized column decides to enter the city. The videos show vehicles passing between sidewalks attended by unarmed protesters, but also by youth with helmets, black sweatshirts, gas masks, sticks, bottles.
Another crazy sequence, after the one in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where on August 26 a 17-year-old Trump fan killed two protesters.
The leader of the White House appeared from 6 in the morning on Sunday on Twitter. Overflowing: over 60 messages between direct posts and retweets: “The big fight that’s going on in Portland can’t be unexpected after watching the incompetent mayor admit for 95 days that he had no idea what he was doing. The people of Portland can last no longer without security. The mayor (Democrat ed Ted Wheleer) is a fool. Call the National Guard. Then an acknowledgment for the mobilization of the “Great Patriots” and other accusations of “weakness” directed at Joe Biden and the Democrats, which he opposes to the main slogan of his campaign: law and order.
The president will repeat it to Kenosha on Tuesday. Instead, Biden would have given up going there.
