Viterbo – “The hurricane destroyed the house, the sheds, the barns. It destroyed everything … We are without electricity or gas. The wind carried away pigs and sheep ”. Riccardo Stefanoni’s family is on their knees. The house and the farm are in pieces. They are along the north of Cassia, in the territory of the municipality of Viterbo, and yesterday afternoon a hurricane, or at least it looked a lot like it, hit everything head-on. Destroying everything he found along the way. The Stefanoni house and the company were in the middle of the cyclone and the consequences were serious. And just by a miracle no one was hurt.

“We have also lost some animals – says Stefanoni -. The house is gone, there are cracks everywhere and a room has been completely destroyed. Tonight my family and I just don’t know where to sleep. Maybe with the sheep or in the car ”. Along with Riccardo, her son Andrea Stefanoni and her daughter Alessia’s boyfriend, Francesco Bellatreccia. In the courtyard are his wife Giuliana Vestri and a friend. They are waiting for the firefighters to arrive. An hour before the carabinieri were there for a first inspection.

Along the north of Cassia it appears to be at the scene of a plane crash where the plane is the high voltage pylon, more than 20 meters high, that fell near the home of Riccardo Stefanoni. The cables are a few feet above the ground. Even one would seem cut off. Laying the cables, like fabrics, the sheets that seem to come out of a shed 3-400 meters from the Stefanoni family house. Along the north of Cassia, in fact, the hurricane completely uncovered a structure that then spat debris everywhere. Within a radius of hundreds of meters.

Always along Cassia, trees, wooden and iron fences, road signs have been uprooted. A disaster that threatens to destroy a working life. Small artisan businesses and farms of few hectares, already rehearsed for the Covid emergency. Rural realities, specifically the farms in these parts, often unknown. On the outskirts of the city and yet a few hundred meters from it. In some cases, subsistence economies and forgotten anthropological contexts. Brought ashore and into the spotlight by a storm.

The whirlwind was very violent, comparable precisely to a small hurricane. But capable of destroying everything equally. Even at the risk of killing. “We are not dead – says Riccardo Stefanoni – because we were not at home.”

A house, that of the Stefanoni family, reduced to pieces. The roof was dismantled. “The damage is there for all to see – continues Riccardo Stefanoni -. Something out of the ordinary. I had never seen anything like it “. Almost all partitions are damaged. Not to mention the roof.

“The most serious problem is the roof – explains Alessia Stefanoni -. Then there are many cracks in the walls. I don’t know how we will do it ”. His room was completely devastated. Shattered mirrors, pieces of debris fallen on the bed, moved cabinets. Everywhere the ceiling seems to be crumbling.

Around the Stefanoni house it is as if the front of World War II has passed again, with the German and Anglo-American armies to the north. The hurricane tore down the walls, taking with it warehouse pieces and buildings it had encountered earlier on its way.

“It destroyed everything – Stefanoni says -. The sheds, the silos, the barns. We don’t even have water and electricity anymore. I have a herd of 400 sheep. About twenty if the wind blew them away. We don’t know where. Probably 7 out of 9 piglets also had the same end. The wind also knocked over a 4 quintal refrigerator and a 20 pound countertop, I am speechless. You just have to put your hands in your hair. Huge economic damage. “
