SBK, Rea: “I took Foret’s advice, touched my elbow and won”

There is little to say. Rea ruined the party that Ducati thought could continue today, after yesterday’s big double, and it did showing everyone why this category has dominated for the last 5 seasons. The world champion won the Superpole Race, the sixth in a row if we also count the victories at the end of 2019 in Magny Cours and Losail, and literally dominated in race 2 Except for a small error five laps from the end in the last sector.

“I couldn’t get into third gear before the last corner – Rea told us in Aragon – I was in fourth gear and I didn’t have an engine brake, so I went long and lost time. This gave Chaz a chance to attack me but I was able to react immediately and kept up my pace. During the race I saw that his distance from me was constant and I knew that in case of error he would overtake me ”.

Today’s victory in Race 2, combined with the race pace, has astonished all the professionals here in Aragon. But would Jonathan Rea hope to be able to show that rhythm?

I would not have expected all this today, I knew it was fast but not until now.. The Superpole Race gave me a lot of confidence because in Race 1, when Scott passed me, he disturbed my pace and it was difficult to respond to him. Today it was easier to control the fall of the tires but I must say that yesterday he taught me a lot and I realized that I have to change a bit of style to give the bike more stability when braking ”.

So today you drove in a different style than usual? We noticed a lot of braking work with very accentuated body movements, especially in Superpole Race.

“The team doesn’t want to make too many changes to the bike like this they asked me to change my driving style a bit, especially when the tires start to drop. Fabian Foret, my coach, helped me during the tests, I am changing my style in the corners and the changes are helping me especially in the left corners because on the right, with the throttle on that side, I still feel a bit. Complicated. I’m scratching the sliders on my elbow for the first time, He had never touched them on the ground before. With my body I can help the bike turn but I lose some stability, it is a commitment. I don’t know how much to quantify the gain, but today I felt very good ”.

“I think Honda is coming …”

Staying technically: you talked about a tire crash, what decisions did you make today and how do you think of the Pirellis on this track?

“Today I chose the tire that I used last year, the same as yesterday, they are tires that we know and I can say that perhaps the temperature today was a bit high to work the best. When it’s colder we don’t need a lot of grip on the tire, when it’s hot it’s better to choose tires that can give us more security from this point of view ”.

The surprise of the day is Bautista’s podium with the Honda HRC. Remembering the first test in Jerez at the beginning of the year, when everyone was “spying” on the new CBR 1000 RR-R, would you have expected such a quick podium?

“Álvaro is very strong on this track, we saw him last year. Honda has been testing here and they seem to be heading in the right direction. Sure, they use the SCX and have the same pace as we have with the SC0, but I think they are coming. You always work a lot on the bike, mine is one of the oldest and we keep improving ”.

“Scott Redding has a lot of experience, I don’t know if I’m the favorite”

Yesterday he was low while today he is the leader of the championship again. You expected it

“We all know this is a good track for Ducati and today, frankly, I would not have expected to win Race 2. Rinaldi did very well, Chaz finished on the podium in two races and Scott won yesterday’s race. I’m motivated to do my best, I knew I could be in the fight, but I thought Chaz and Scott could do it. Today I was surprised with what I did”.

The point lead in qualifying is now 10 and Scott is unfamiliar with the Magny Cours track. Do you feel favorite for the victory?

“I don’t know if I am the favorite, he also has a lot of experience on the track in Barcelona where we will race in a few weeks. The championship is still long and we have to think race after race because we have another twelve races ahead. I have a lot of determination inside of me, so today’s bike has been incredible to ride and for that I have to thank the team. We suffered on the straight but the Kawasaki is the best in braking and changes of direction, today we had the best package for the direction the race took ”.
