Lower the masks in the classroom, when the students are sitting in their individual seats and one meter apart. The rule will apply to everyone from 6 years to expiration. Today, at the meeting scheduled for the afternoon, the scientific and technical committee will confirm the orientation of the last weeks on the use of the mask at school. Students must wear one, even made of cloth, when entering and leaving, when going to the bathroom, going to the dining room and even during breaks. But during class they can take it off. For teachers, on the other hand, the CTS prescribes surgical masks (which will be available to each school, as a disinfectant) or even transparent masks, such as those for the deaf, which allow the mouth and facial expression to be seen, as long as they have all the certifications required by law. Therefore, these devices may not be available by September 14. And if the situation worsens, on the eve of recovery, the CTS could propose stricter anti-contagion regulations for some areas of the country.
The emergency
What will really happen in the classroom? Teachers will be able to remove the mask while explaining: for this reason, a distance of two meters has been provided between the desk and the first desk, to allow you to remain without face covers that prevent you from working properly. What if a little student needs an emergency: a cry, a problem with a task? The teacher can be approached even if the child does not have a mask, it is important that the teacher has one and washes her hands after helping the student.
Doubts about the major
On the eve of the resumption, schools reopen tomorrow with school councils and remedial courses, there is still a lot of apprehension, especially for older students, those from secondary schools: not because they can get infected at school if the rules are respected, but for the contacts they may have in the afternoon, with other activities, including sports, entertainment and various lessons. The CTS has rejected the hypothesis of the swabs: there are problems of numbers – only in the upper secondary schools there are 2.5 million students – and of responsibility: the consent of the parents is needed since they are minors. The president of the rectors (NPC) Antonello Giannelli would like to at least ask the parents for a self-certification, in which it is stated that the child has not had contact with the infected and is not in quarantine. The federation of nurses launches the idea of sending at least 8,000 nurses to schools.
“Fragile workers”
On the other hand, what worries not only directors is the issue of “fragile workers”: in Veneto hundreds of requests have already arrived from teachers and ATA staff asking for exemption from face-to-face classes due to illness and old age (almost the half of the teachers are over 55 years old). In Tuscany there are a thousand questions. The Ministry of Education, Health and Public Administrations is preparing a circular with strict rules in the definition of who can request the exemption, to avoid doubts or even abuse. In any case, the doctor of the local health authority or the Inail service will decide. In addition to the exemption, teachers and support staff may be used for services that are not in contact with children.
