Malal, the 14-year-old girl who died in Marina di Massa with her little sister

Two sisters, one 3 years old and the other older than 14 years old, were killed by a tree that fell on the tent of the camp. Actually, they first went to sleep in a small tent, but then, fearing the storm, they decided to move into the parents’ larger tent. And that’s where they died at the Verde Mare campsite in Marina di Massa (Massa Carrara). It happened at 7 a.m. on Sunday, after hours of rain, strong winds and storms in northwestern Tuscany. According to the carabinieri, at the time of the poplar collapse, six people were sleeping in the tent, a whole Moroccan family originally from Casablanca but living in Turin and who arrived in Marina di Massa on August 18 to spend a few days at sea. According to some campers present at the campsite, the family would have benefited from the vacation voucher.

Jannat, 3, almost died instantly and Malal, 14, made it to the hospital but the trauma she suffered was too severe and she died shortly after being taken to the emergency room. The parents, a 43-year-old man and a 36-year-old wife, another 19-year-old sister and a 9-year-old brother are unharmed. “A strong and moving hug to parents and family members, writes Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte in a tweet. The tragic death of the two sisters who were on vacation in Marina di Massa hurts us deeply. A vacation turned into tragedy. “” I cling to the Turin family of the two girls, “writes Governor Enrico Rossi, remembering the wave of bad weather that hit Tuscany.
The Verde Mare campsite is a recently built accommodation, equipped with 28 mobile homes, 30 pitches for motorhomes and a large area for tents, within a green area with poplars and sea pines. According to some testimonies from the residents of the tent, the family should have left the camp yesterday, but decided not to travel, given the storm that had started to hit the coast since early afternoon. Those responsible for the Massa campsites, together with the provincial president of Ageparc, Marco Lucetti, speak of a whirlwind, which happened fatally at 7 in the morning at the Verde Mare campsite that would have slightly damaged even some other adjacent structures.
At the moment, the researchers did not want to qualify the phenomenon precisely, speaking only of “strong gusts of wind” that, in any case, would have prevented Pegasus from approaching the camp, to transfer the girls to the emergency room first. The poplar broke, lifting all its roots and falling, it landed in the igloo tent of the Moroccan family. The two girls died of crushing trauma. For Malal it was possible, with the consent of his parents, to extract some organs. The area has been seized by the prosecutor who has opened a file: he is investigating the causes of the collapse of the poplar that, according to some witnesses, perhaps had dry roots.
“We are trying to understand whether or not it was foreseeable that the tree, due to the conditions in which it was found, could fall in bad weather, since underneath there were spaces for tents,” said the Massa Carrara prosecutor. Piero Capizzoto. Also in the investigation, the Massa prosecutor has appointed a forestry agronomist who will carry out an inspection of the campsite tomorrow, with the aim of an expert opinion on the real conditions of the fallen plant. Meanwhile, the owner of the Verde Mare campsite was held at the police station throughout the morning to be questioned and to provide all the information in his possession.
Tomorrow in the city of Massa the mourning, as established by the mayor Francesco Persiani: “We gather around the family that, due to bad weather, has lost two daughters. A terrible tragedy and great suffering, for which I express my great condolences to the family members, my condolences and to all citizens ”.
