The director of the Viale San Pietro clinic: no drama, just the need to deal with the emergency situation of recent weeks
SASSARI. “There is no dramatic situation or anguish in Infectious Diseases, but the need to face the emergency situation that has arisen in recent days, after the numerous hospitalizations of patients who have come to our structure from the tourist areas of northern Sardinia.” This is the explanation of the director of the clinic in viale San Pietro in Sassari, Professor Sergio Babudieri, who, to ensure a better organization of the operation of the structure, called the staff to return to work on holidays scheduled for September. “A necessary choice – he adds – because currently, in our clinic and in a very short time, the number of hospitalized patients is increasing. We are talking about 17 patients, of which 3 are in subintensive and 3 in intensive care, the latter managed in our facility with the fundamental support of anesthetists-resuscitators led by Professor Pier Paolo Terragni ».
For the moment, in fact, the focal point of the activity takes place only in the infectious diseases building, separated from all other assistance structures of the Aou di Sassari. “We are in a phase of recovery from the disease – adds Professor Terragni – we have had several hospitalizations at various levels of complexity that we have centralized in the clinic directed by Professor Babudieri”. According to the director of the Viale San Pietro Resuscitation, “at present the type of presentation of the disease follows the one we experienced at the beginning of the year, that is, they are ill with particular problems, with comorbidities that predispose to lung deterioration. We have, however – he continues – also cases of patients who have had an expression of the disease simply from the respiratory point of view ».
Meanwhile, however, Professor Terragni specifies that the Company “is equipping all available assistance and improving patient treatment within the center. This is a preview of a pandemic recovery, also in accordance with the indications issued by the Ministry and the local crisis unit.
According to the two specialists, the role of the territory is now important: “At this time – says Pier Paolo Terragni – we have to work a lot in the territory, fully support patients in the situation of home management and provide availability, as already we are doing, for more delicate and complex cases, even those admitted to intensive care ». «The virus is always the same – explains Sergio Babudieri – while the fact that we have learned to know it has changed. Today it is possible to make early diagnoses in the area and treat these patients even at home. In this way it is possible to promote their recovery and reduce the number of hospital admissions ”.
Finally, according to Babudieri, “the disease seems to develop unfavorably in some of the people in whom an early diagnosis was not made. And if the virus spreads in our population, obviously, like the flu, the most fragile people will be affected, that is, the elderly and those who suffer from multiple diseases. The challenge at the moment is not to let the virus reach these people ”, he concludes.
