Lorenza Famularo was 22 years old and it is not known why she died in the Lipari hospital on the night of August 23. In the previous days she had been seen four times by the doctor and in the hospital because she had felt pain, first in the neck and then in the abdomen. “Someone had spoken of cervicals, others of a muscular contracture,” her partner, Antonio Marino, a thirty-year-old businessman, whispers. The fact is that on the afternoon of the 22nd, “when she left my house on foot shortly before midnight to get home, she fainted. But she had time to text me, “come and help me.” I ran, I was on the ground, not even fifty meters away. I called the ambulance from which later, once in the emergency room, he came out screaming with pain in his abdomen. Afterwards I did not hear from her again and a couple of hours later the doctors told us, even the mother who arrived in the meantime, that she was very ill and that they were doing everything possible to revive her … ».
Anger
What happened to Lorenza, a hotel employee, an enthusiastic actress in a small theater company, unleashed the ire of the people of Lipari. On Friday about two thousand people, from about 13 thousand residents, gathered in the port of Sottomonastero blocking the exit of the hydrofoils. A fierce garrison on the dock: it will remain there until the arrival, perhaps tomorrow, of the Councilor for Health Ruggero Razza sent by Governor Musumeci who speaks of “the cry of alarm of the citizens to listen”. Who knows if it will be enough. With “cuts and reduction of services” everyone complains of a collapse in the health of the city, especially in summer, when it is attacked by tourists and vacationers “reaching peaks of 100,000 people”, explains Lorenza’s partner leading the protest.
Mayor
Mayor Marco Giorgianni is also mobilizing: “It is clear that here it is not only the death of a girl on whom the Judiciary will have to shed light, but also because of the health conditions in the Aeolian Islands.” Three investigations have already been opened: in addition to the Barcelona Pozzo di Gotto Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Health and the ASL of Messina are investigating, which suspended the nurse who at 11 p.m. on August 14 had “referred the patient to the medical guard, without following the planned health services procedures. ”
Mother
Not even half an hour after Lorenza’s death, her boyfriend accompanied his mother, Angela Giardina, 51, to the police for the complaint. Her daughter had told her that on the 14th – after having been accused at work of a first illness “in the neck and shoulder” – the infirmary had given her an injection of analgesic “but did not visit her properly”. The next day, without improvement, another doctor gave him an injection of “Muscoril” speaking of “anxiety”. We arrived at 18 and a hospital doctor diagnosed “muscle inflammation” due to posture at work, perhaps favored “by a new blow to the air conditioning.” To which Lorenza replies that “there was no air conditioning in her office.” Before firing her, the doctor prescribes a pill to promote muscle relaxation and then the mother – who asks for an X-ray – replies that “it is not appropriate to subject the girl to harmful rays” with which “they would not have seen each other.” muscle problems. “As the cardiologist is not in the Lipari hospital these days, Lorenza goes – we at 22 – to a specialist who happens to be a hotel customer: the doctor rules out heart problems and at least recommends an abdominal X-ray. But a few hours later the situation worsened. To clarify the causes of death, an autopsy will be carried out on the 25th. Two days later the protest broke out in Lipari. First the hospital was occupied, then the boarding block of the hydrofoils. The boyfriend was in the front row but there was no mother Angela devastated by grief: “Lorenza had so many dreams and was too young to die.”
