Livorno, August 29, 2020 – Several firefighting teams from the Livorno command with reinforcements arrived from Pisa, Massa, Lucca and Prato, after two hours of hard work they managed to tame the fire it was lit at around 2 p.m. in the warehouse with the gardening material, the nursery and the company’s point of sale Ghiomelli Garden in via Firenze.
It all started after 2pm when the facility was closed for lunch. At that moment in the area blew a strong wind that continually fanned the flames that were spread by the presence of numerous plants, wood and plastic items (many were Christmas decorations). The fire has destroyed the buildings of the Ghiomelli company. No person was involved in the fire.
Only a couple of firefighters were assisted by Mercy and Public Assistance first responders due to the dense smoke developed by the fire and the high temperatures. Traffic was interrupted through Firenze and diverted to facilitate the intervention of firefighters. From a first reconstruction of the events it appears that the fire started from an abandoned land invaded by vegetation between the Ghiomelli company and a gas station. If firefighters had not intervened promptly, the consequences of the fire would have been even more devastating.
in the meantime the mayor of Livorno Luca Salvetti de Livorno stated: “A historical activity in the city has been destroyed and this is what shocks us. We will work on the goods and structures engulfed by the flames with the forms of help that we can give to these entrepreneurs. In the meantime, it is important that has not been injured or killed. ” Following the mayor’s instructions, the municipality’s environment department invited residents of the Korean, Shanghai and Fiorentina districts to keep their windows closed for 8 hours. Only then can they ventilate the houses.
